  • 0. Thank you, Bashiok, for the new map pools   09/06/2012 10:55:42 AM PDT
If I could have a word with you and my fellow players of Warcraft 3, I would like to say thank you for hearing our plea of new maps, particularly for 4v4, which is the only mode I play and has been since 2004.

I feel whoever made the decisions did an adequate job of giving us 4 "new" maps and removing 4 older ones. If I may, I would like to recommend some slight tweaks and give a little input on possible minor alterations that could be made. If everything stays the same, I would still be grateful to the legacy team and to you, Bashiok, as well. You people did a great job and good karma to you. I would just like to offer a little more input to the most popular gametype on Warcraft 3 TFT, 4v4 random team games.

Current 4v4rt maps as of 9/6/2012- Deadlock, Market Square, Mur'Gul Oasis, Twilight Ruins, Last man Standing, Deathknell, Deadlands, Fullscale Assault, Golems in the Mist, Cherryville, Dragon Falls, Battlegrounds,

In my opinion, there are some maps here that won't be missed if they get removed, even if they been in the 4v4 pool for 7+ years. I don't know if there is a limit to how many maps can be in a pool, but if there is, I would suggest the following:

Remove:

Golems in the Mist- This map has been in the pool for a very long time. There is nothing really wrong with this map. In fact, it is arguably the most balanced 4v4 map currently. The problem is, this map isn't impressive or flashy. Its just, to put it bluntly, overstayed its welcome.

Deadlock- Like Golems in the Mist, this is an incredibly balanced map, but once again, it is not particularly impressive and its been in the pool for a real long time, maybe too long since it doesn't really do anything impressive.

Dragon Falls- I'm going to be honest, I've never been a big fan of this map. Yes, there are dragons you can hire in the middle, which is unique to the other maps in the pool, but if you have to boot a map out to add another in, I say get rid of this as well.

Deathknell or Last man Standing- I mention two maps here, because as people may know, these are two recently added maps, and there is a lot of disdain towards them both. Both are incredibly huge maps and both don't have Merchant Shops, which is a bit odd. There are lots of complaints that Last Man Standing is too imbalanced and just way too "bunched up," since everything is packed in and dense on such a big map. I particularly like Last Man Standing since I like these kinds of maps, but lots of players don't. If one has to go, I say Deathknell should "get the axe," because for such a huge map, it suffers from not being unique and having nothing flashy/impressive about it. It has nothing in the middle of the map and there is such a huge open area with nothing in the middle. I really don't understand this map in terms of what it brings to the table.

If you kept count, this is 4 or so maps that should be removed, particularly for being in the map pool for too long, or just not being unique compared to the other maps. If some maps do get removed, I recommend adding the following maps, and I'm going to copy/paste some of the suggestions a player named Drayen made, who is arguably one of the most credible players in suggesting 4v4 map pool input, since he has been playing 4v4 at a high level pretty much at the beginning:

Add:

Blasted lands: This map has been in the mappool for a very long time since the start of RoC, easy expos, easy to harass, lots of secondary expo possibilites, high level items, a good map for short and long term play. This map is basically a superior version of Last Man Standing, which has the same terrain layout. Its much more balanced and an oldschool map that players will appreciate.

Northshire: One of the better maps, moderatly easy to harass but also easy to defend, easy expos, lots of creeps, games can go on pretty long in this map, lots of good memories on this as well. This is my favorite 4v4 map and I obviously want it back. Its unique because it has a different layout and terrain than any other map and it may feel a bit nostalgic because it has a layout similar to WC3's campaign in Stratholme. If the legacy team does read this, I absolutely want this map so badly. Its by far, my favorite. Like Drayen Said, its a great rush map and a great tech map, so to speak.

Feralas: Simplistic look, but lots of creeps (Would need some creep camps fixed so they dont kill rallied units though... no big deal), easy to harass, promotes very intense games, has some of my best 4v4 rt memories.. This is an incredibly simple map, but its so easy for players to fall in love with the ease of it, excluding the creeps netting rallying units. Another oldschool map.

Crossroads- Finally, another oldschool map that is absolutely huge, but has a lot of "candies" to help sweeten up the map. There is a ton of strategies and tactics to use on this map, and its both a rush and tech map, which players can appreciate. If the big current maps Deathknell or Last Man Standing get removed, I definitely say add in this big map, because it does the same as those other 2 big maps, except its a lot more balanced and has a lot more "goodies."

I don't know if you, Bashiok, or the legacy team will read this, but I'm grateful for you guys giving us new 4v4rt maps. I made this thread to give just a few suggestions in case if you guys make a few alterations in the near future. I still feel there needs to be a few more teaks to the pool, but I feel speak for most wc3 players, when I say we are very grateful.

and I would also remove Mur'gul Oasis and add back Gold Rush. Gold Rush is a solid map that people have grown to love. Mur'gul is just creep to level 3 and hit.

i dont see any reason to take any maps out of the pool. put them all in and remove the fúcking veto option since you only get one anyway

having 8 players with one veto just creates a system where love/hate maps like hurricane isle(read: last man standing now) are never played, even if it's less than 50% of the population that crosses them off the list. and since the other maps resemble each other so strongly, there's no real reason to pick any one of them for a veto

the 4v4 single veto is in function just a vote on whether the one and only nontraditional map is played at all. it takes one vote out of 8 players to keep it banned. you do the math. if 25% of the 4v4 playerbase keeps their veto on hurricane(last man), the map gets played 10% of the time. if just 50% of the playerbase hates this polarizing map enough to veto it, the map gets played less than 1% of the time. the last time i ran an analysis on my games played (with an n of ~2000), hurricane isle accounted for >1% of my games. so less than 50% of the playerbase hates it, and for the sake of that noobtrash minority, the map is simply stricken from the rotation

would it be such a crime if every 15 games the 4 miner, 4 footy, 40 apm rush crowd had to play a game on an interesting map? lord kaelthas sends his warriors to face the enemy in battle, regardless of where that takes him. his loyal generals should be willing to do battle in any location, including the hurricane isles

i absolutely do think all maps should be included in the pool but I don't think they like doing that for whatever reason.

I miss Cross Roads and Northshire so much. I completely forgot about crossroads existing until Drayen mentioned it. I think that's the map where one of the bases can be easily attacked from the back and the player has to travel a long ways to defend his base or something like that.

I got blasted lands and last man standing mixed up. They are so damn similar yet blasted lands is clearly the more refined map.
