These three maps all have one main base and one expansion. Their expansions are all in close distance of the main bases, making the expansions really easy to defend.
This in turn, makes these maps really really dull. Theres nothing to fight over. Large maps NEED a disparity in number of expansions to number of main bases so theres actually room for competition!
These maps become pretty much scripted:
- Everyone creeps their green
- Everyone creeps their expansion
- Everyone expands
- Everyone towers up their base and expansion
- One team groups up and attacks a random enemy expansion
- Other team town portals over to defend
- First team town portals away
- All gold mines run out
- Everyone is 100/100 but has no gold
- One team groups up again and attacks a random enemy base
- Other team town portals over to defend
- First team town portals out
- No gold left for anyone to buy another town portal
- People start calling each other noobs and stuff
Twilight ruins is actually an amazing map, it was one, if not my favorite, back in the days it used to be in the mappool... It's really easy to harass expansions as the middle gives you a really easy access to them, so it's easy to throw off someone off his "creep expo" pattern, it allows for varied styles of play... my only "concern" would be that its pretty thight if you deicde to attack from the edges of the map rather than from the middle.. Also i dont really understand how everybody running their two mines dry is that common, the longest game ive had on that map is 50~ min and there were still mines to be mined, althou very little.
Deathknell however.. terrible map, hard to access the enemy bases. Lastman standing? Even worse, if you want to attack, you have to either buy a zep or cross the terribly small middle guarded by a lvl10 dragon, worst map... probably worse than hurricane isle.
Anyways, 1 expo is plenty, who says you cant expo to your enemy's side? :P
I personally love Twilight Ruins as well, also happens to be one of my favorite FFA maps, Drayen broke it down nicely.
Deathknell I think is ok, the creeps take some getting used to but it's not too terrible, at least there's goblin shops and easily accessible expansions and such.
Last Man standing is awful, if it gets picked I always leave at start. I would thumb it, but that pleasure is reserved for the even worse map Golems.
At least they got rid of Friends and Slalom, two really terrible maps.
i love twilight ruins as well. I actually like last man standing, because games could be really long on it. I acknowledge that its not a well designed map.
I have yet to get on Deathknell. No idea what its like.
I love deadlands.
