I understand that temporary restriction and realm downs were added to prevent server abuse and control server load. I understand that this is a "legacy" game and that support is slowly dwindling. Anyways, over the last few weeks I feel like there has been a huge increase in temporary restrictions and realm downs. I can even play more than a few baal games before I get kicked off the realm... At this point there are barely any players left, is there really that much server stress? And if there is, why can't you guys do another ban wave or something, even if you removed a fractions of the cheaters it would reduce server stress for the legitimate players that still play this game...

I know this will never be acknowledged or even seen given the activity level in this forum, but please blizzard, please do away with this temporary restriction and realm down enforcement, its killing whats left of the legitimate players in the game. It doesn't even affect the botters because they use 100's of stolen cdkeys or what not... so if you are using this to curb server stress you are targeting the wrong people :(

I'm impressed. Someone didn't say "Get rid of temp banzz cuz it's only hurtin' the playas and not the bots that ur tryin to stop."

It may be two things. Their new server hardware. Or runaway bots controlled from China. At any rate, I'd love to see what happens if they remove the temp ban system, because if they're sensitive now, I wonder what it would be like to have it completely uncontrolled. Maybe it would be just like the rollback fiasco a few seasons back. Only one way to know. Let it go to hell without any brakes.

How much time do you take between swaps? If you're going to say "None cuz I'll get realm down," that's likely what's causing it.

The restrictions aren't meant to stop bots, they're meant to kick off anything generating too much server stress, Stopping bots was an initial side effect when it was put in place.

"realize it."

Yeah too bad that the restrictions actually don't prevent reduced server stress it just hurts whats left of the legit players...

also i remember that when there was those mass roll backs it wasn't due to server stress it was vulnerability in battle.net net that people were exploiting and then it was patched so i dont see temp restriction and realm down help against that

I already suggested that they should remove the system so the "playas can play." I just don't think that it will solve the problem. Are you also suggesting you try to rejoin a game immediately because you're afraid you'll get realm downed?

I just played past 3 years on asia realm (I'm American). Why would chinese botters bot on east for practically nothing, when they have their own trade site (B@%***#.NET or something google) that deals in real money? Learn some facts before you speak.

EDIT: lol i guess blizz doesnt like us posting other sites --- google BBS

Lost a jah-mageplate on the floor due to realm down while cleaning stash. Took 2 weeks to trade up to that from scratch.

Can I get my 2 weeks back?

Temporary restrictions? How about Blizzard hire me so I can write an algorithm for banning the spam bots permanently. Let's see how many stolen cd keys they got in China.

You sure got me, yes you did!

Since I don't have any facts, perhaps you can tell me why there are tons of spambots on USEast with absolutely atrocious grammar if there's nothing to be made? And when I whois these item sites on Google, why did most of them point to China?

Blizz has blame to shoulder, yes. They certainly should have taken more action than they have. This I'm not trying to refute. But f they haven't changed any settings for their temp ban program, why are people getting booted off? And how would it be better to remove the system that keeps those stressing the server from pushing it to crash?

Okay, so they've stopped spamming public games?

That's odd, your first post somewhat indicated the r/d system was in place to manage server load, not just to stop bots. Which was only an unintended side effect. And how much difference is there between a bot that joins a game three times in five minutes and a "legit" muling his items by swapping characters every 60 seconds?

last time i checked all the spam bots are advertising american sites
they are not chinese lol...

not to mention if you just put a lvl restrict like everyone does not they don't even matter anymore

and yes my point is valid

spam botters join game leave game every 5 secs --- thats huge server load compared to regular players....

temp + rd doesn't event affect them so once again the point of temp+rd is meaningless

also post some proof before you start saying that its chinese botters... it seems like you just pander to blizzards failed methods that prevent legit users from playing the game its like they are "enabling botters" purposely

Nice way to think you've dodged my point. They still join/quit public games, which is another reason the game list is frequently empty.

Oh right! and some artificially intelligent script should be able to tell the difference just by the activity?
And didn't you just contradict yourself in the previous sentence by claiming that a level restriction solves that so they don't matter. It would help if Blizz did manage to keep some of those 600 employees they laid off to sit in a pubbie and gather data for a ban wave. That would help immensely.

You love the carousel, don't you. It wasn't meant to stop bots, it was meant to kick off anyone generating too many packets. Like when I used to swap 12 characters in 15 minutes looking for that damned Iratha's Belt.

I've learned to slow down before joining a game and I've managed to mule quite effectively. I haven't been slapped in over two seasons. I've also lost nice pixels to temp restrictions, game crashes, and leaving a game with two geared corpses. I just don't see the point to crying about pixels any more. If my pixels were that precious, I'd install ATMA and not bother with bottle.net

its easy for server to distinguish between spambotters and regular players....

if you /f a spambotter and check your flist you will see they are shown as offline

its because they disconnect from bncs after logging in....

so if you just do a check and see all characters that are connected to mcp but not bncs and not in d2gs that means its a spam botter...

once again you provide no evidence saying otherwise

rd / temp does not lessen server load, also what does "packets" have to do with server load, do you actually know what you are talking about? d2 is constantly sending packets when its connected to bnet... the reason server load is more for creating games and leaving has nothing to do with packets... when you enter game you have to connect to d2gs and when you leave game you have to disconnect from d2gs and connect to bncs... thats why there is server load not because of "packets"

do some research on bnet protocol before commenting about stuff you don't know about

If the whole issue was simply reducing server load, then fine. There is a million and one ways they could have implemented a system. Instead they seemed to have chosen the absolute worst method. What I love best is that players get a "Realm Down" without the realm being down, or any info on exactly what and why they were disconnected. That they were too lazy to even program an appropriate error message informing the player is just un-execusable.

I do remember the first time I got one, I even went so far as to download from here a Bnet diagnostic tool to figure out why I could not connect. I especially loved how Blizzard would never actually comment on any aspect, or provide any information what so ever to help people avoid them. That they could not even inform you how long it would last, much less the fact that the time seemed almost random for some. I remember one lasting a few minutes, another lasting 15+ hours. I remember taking every necessary precaution, taking my time to slowly enter and leave a run, and still getting a ban. I also remember not giving a bleep and entering and exiting over and over and not getting one.

This was a cheap and lazy system implemented by Blizzard in a fashion that truly showed they could not give a BLEEP about their community. One reason why to this day I just can not fathom how anyone could be a fanboy of this company, not when they have such a long history of basically screwing their players in as many ways as they see fit.

edit: Anyone at least surprised by this competence? This coming from the company that could not even implement a decent forum?

You know what!?

They did a poll on ladder reset, why not a poll for capcha?
Or is it even possible to create at the 'create/join' game side?

I know many don't like passworded games but bots (or most) can't capcha soooo....

I've heard a lot of talk about bots being able to navigate around or through capcha yet haven't seen a single spam thread in this forum since it went live.

Could ultimately remove the 'realm down' issue and turn off the monitoring system of game join/leave/join so many love to do.

Knowledge isn't the filling of a cup. More the starting of a fire.

Fix "Grush". Period. This would SIGNIFICANTLY drop the number of bots in Hell/Nightmare games thus in return decreasing the server load.

Grushing is a glitch, it is not intended to be in the game, therefore it should not be in the game, there are other ways to rush your character without having to quest glitch into Hell at level 1.
