Hi I was doing mf runs last night and hit a HUGE lag spike that has been happening ever since Diablo 3's release. Since i didn't know what was going on I exited the game and now my character is invisible. Doesn't show him dead in a robe and doesn't show him alive and geared. Just blank. Can anyone tell me what is going on? I can't join/create a game but I can go into channels and talk. Never seen this before. I play on uswest hardcore non ladder. Thanks

Q u o t e: Known random occurrence , fill out a form on the blizzard website and you will get the character back in a week or so. I had this happen to me before.
Thank you for your response but I'm new to the site and dont know what form your talking about. Anyways you could link me?

Since you said it was hardcore you don't need to contact anybody anymore because your character has died.
It's a long known issue in D2 that a hardcore character can become invisible when he/she is dying under lag or disconnect conditions.
To be fair, it has happen to me on softcore, however if it is a more common occurring item on hardcore, I defer to your wisdom. However it would not hurt to know for sure.

Well OP stated it was hardcore and you can be assured: that hardcore character is dead. This invisible dead HC char issue is as old as D2; i had it at least twice myself.

While not a hardcore specific issue, the character is indeed dead. Characters killed with high server latency sometimes fail to correctly load the ghost model, I'm unsure why. Unfortunately dead hardcore characters cannot be restored for any reason including server lag killing them. Sorry.

Heh imagine if players could petition to get hc chars back after lag kills. D2 would need more admins than wow.
I'm thinking of raising a boner next ladder. Anyone want to rub, I mean run, with me?

It's as easy as removing a flag in the character file, Blizzard just doesn't want to go reversing all of the hardcore mode lag-based kills especially when something like this goes on.
Sure their ToU says "they're not responsible for any incidents that occur from interruption of service", but when it's their server that lags instead of your internet, one must think why they're putting in a statement to reduce the work done on their part to ensure everything is in stable working order.
Wonder if they're taking this exact same stance on Diablo III hardcore.

I'm sure they do, to them a death is a death no matter if it was your brother or your cat or a thunderstorm or their server crashing. They will not restore dead hardcore characters they are the player's responsibility.

How is a player responsible when the lag was on the server's end and not the player's connection? Nothing the common player can do can make the server "stop lagging" or "fix itself", so if the server decides to hit a lag spike once you come up to a group of monsters you're screwed unless the server experiences an outright crash and rollback.

Obviously they can choose not to play hardcore. Hardcore simply comes with this additional risk, if a player doesn't like it they can feel free not to play hardcore. If anyone reads the warnings or the terms of use they would understand this is what hardcore is going into it.
