I bought Diablo II years ago (probably like most of you), when it was new. Wow, I remember the graphics and gameplay; it was stellar.
So now, for reasons of nostalgia and just because Diablo III is bringing back D2 memories, I went and purchased D2 again. Yes, I usually have to pay for my games at least twice. How the hell do I know where my original CD key is from 80 years ago? So... you're welcome Blizzard, for getting buttloads of money from me all the time. Anyway, back to the point...
How in the world are all you playing the game? 800x600... man, things were really bad back then weren't they? I remember it being all high-res and good looking! Do you run it in windowed mode or something? And is that very playable, considering it would probably be a pretty small window... or do you play full demon-ugly-screen?
I thought I'd poll the players, because I'm really not sure which way is best to play this old game in such unmanageable video resolution.
Q u o t e: I remember it being all high-res and good looking!
You must have been on battery acid during the 90's or something, because this game has always been hideous. Diablo 1 was better looking. The Sims, which came out around the same time, just blows it away. At no time did anyone think it was good looking.
The high-res rendors they used in previews, and are used within the splash pages of the game (those are the goofy looking guys on the title menu, the credits screen, and the "congratulations! here is a silly Cain for your trouble" screen... those are kind of nice. And created from the same 3d models the smudgy in-game muffins are made out of.
maybe he went straight from the old D&D games that were very very very bad to Diablo 2.
What he should have done was bought Diablo 3 because it blows D2 out of the water.
run with -w -nofixaspect and you can maximize to full screen. There is no issue with using sven's wrapper on Battle.net, I've seen some Blizzard techs recommend it in support for solving graphics related issues when little else works.
