Hello everyone,

I have something strange going on, I am playing US west server and made a room called "Act1-" I am currently lvl 8. Well everything is going kind of good, but every once in a while the game shows this green message about some website and all these - - - -. I am not sure if I some how downloaded a virus but I played the game on single player and the messages dont happen. Does anyone know how to turn these messages off cause some times they come and cover the whole Left of the screen with all these Green messages. About some website that I wont name here.

You haven't downloaded a virus. What happens is certain websites pick your name out of the game name list or they enter your game and then add your name to their list so they can periodically annoy you about buying items so the other cheaters won't laugh at you for not being "as cool as they are." The most you can do is report the name/account of the spammer and hope for the best.

That's the problem with playing in public games, you're vulnerable to this kind of harassment. While I play this game mostly solo, getting to know a few folks who are also interested in actually playing the game can go a long way to enhancing one of the fun aspects of online play.

You'll have to brave bots and spammers for a bit, but if you get to know people actually playing the damn game and not just levelling up so they can spend their time botting, you'll be able to escape the spam almost completely. Just don't feel too bad about having to take people off your friends list if you find their play style incompatible with yours.

About the only way I know to do this is joining games which are questing in the same act you are and see if you can find some folks who you can get along with.

I met a really cool guy in the game, and he told me that they where bots and if you see a random person with jumbled letters joing you game to hit P as fast as you can and hit the little mouth thing. And for the green text use the /squelch name. I started to notice a pattern I been playing hardmode. And I see that alot of these spam bots have HC0001 and HC0002 and so on in their account name. I wish there was a way to stop them. for a new player its quite frightening!

Actually, there's another way. Hitting the "n" key will clear the text on the screen. Many bots can spam and leave before you've had the time to squelch them.

Plus there is a permanent way by entering some commands ingame.

Enter /ignorepersist to activate your spam filter in form of the text file "ignorelist" in your D2 folder
Enter /filtermsg <string to filter> to filter unwanted messages containing this string
Enter /unfiltermsg <string to filter> to no longer filter lines containing the string

Note that some letter or numbers are hard to tell apart ingame. So to make sure you got all possible variations for i.e. "m y d i a b l o 2" enter these strings with /filtermsg:

m y d i a b l o 2
m y d i a b l 0 2
m y d i a b I o 2
m y d i a b I 0 2
m y d l a b l o 2
m y d l a b l 0 2
m y d l a b I o 2
m y d l a b I 0 2

Of course you can also edit the "ignorelist" file manually with any text editor.

Do Not Disturb - /dnd will stop this and all "whispers" from reaching you. However if you rely on a Friends List, it will block them as well.

You could always just make a private game or adjust your level restrictions so the level1 bots cant join your game, also means other new player cant join but having to add 100bots gets pretty annoying :/. Good luck :)
