I registered my D2 and D2LOD quite a while ago and decided to reinstall D2 (classic), which I did.
Then I got this error when I tried to connect to Battle.net: "...is unable to properly identify your application version" so I checked online and ran it under compatibility mode and as administrator.

Still didn't work, got the same error.
Funny thing is, it'll work on my OTHER account on my computer which is also an administrator.

Don't use any compatibility modes.

Try manually patching the game by getting the patch file from us separately.

Depending on how old your CD is and which OS you installed on you need to patch D2 (classic) manually.

Compatibility mode (set Win2k) and "run as admin" along with disabling the desktop and theme options is needed afterwards when you run D2 on Vista or Win7.

Venture to the Realms Beyond to get off the beaten path.
