  • 0. BNET error: unable to identify versions   07/07/2012 09:10:06 AM PDT
Fresh install of the game, connected to BNET to get the patch (seems to have worked, game displays 1.13), but when i try to connect to BNET afterward to play I get the error: Unable to Identify Versions.

(Directed to a page which seems to no longer exist, so I have no idea what this means).

Can anyone help? What does this mean?

Edit: Get the same error on both USEAST and USWEST

You may want to download and install the patch itself, rather than let bnet do it for you. I had similar problems whenever I had a fresh install of D2 running on Linux.

Try running your diablo 2 in administrator mode. If not, right click your Diablo 2, Go to Properties, Then to Compatibility and run it in compatability mode windows xp service pack 2, and check off "run as administrator.

If on Windows 7 make sure to right click on the exe file or the short cut and click on run as administrator.
If that does not work then you have a virus.

I was having this issue and I found that my newly installed version of XP was infected with a trojan. Once I removed the trojan I have not had a problem since.

Make sure to ckeck your task manager and make sure you do not have any files that look like efrds.exe running. If you do not know what the exe file is running it is a good chance you have a virus. Also you can check to make sure there is not an extra svchost.exe running. How to do this:

Open Task manager (Ctrl+alt+delete+) sort mem usage by clicking on the tab If you have a svchost using very little memory like less then 3000k end it and then run an anti-virus like Kaspersky or AVG they have free full trial version that will remove these viruses.

Also make sure you turn off system restore until you know your system is clean: Right click on my computer, click ont he system restore tab, click box that says "Turn off System Restore on all drives" This will prevent system restore from putting the virus back on your computer.

Hope this helps.
