I just found my LOD cd case that has the cd key on it but still no sign of the cd itself! I googled around and found out that you can download the client off battlenet if you have the cd key. So I downloaded the installer and used my cd key and the installer started but it requested the cd. What exactly is the point of that?

If you are using the installer from battle.net with the digital download, you will need to make sure that the original D2 was also installed in the same way. So if you installed the original from your CD, you can't do the digital installation.
So make sure you uninstall the original and then reinstall it through battle.net before installing LoD.

1. Have a Battle.net account
2. Registered your Diablo II Classic CD-Key
3. Registered your Diablo II: LoD CD-Key
When you registered your 16-character CD-Keys you were given 26-character Game-Keys. One for Diablo II Classic and one for Diablo II: LoD.
Darknesscalls- may be right. Try uninstalling both, LoD and Diablo II Classic. Then, re-install them both using the digital download and the 26-character Game-Keys.
I hope this helps.

Ok so I put my game CD Keys into my battle.net account as soon as that option was available. Which turns out to be a couple years ago, and I no longer have my actual game CD's anymore.
So, my problem is even though I've downloaded and installed D2, D2 LoD back to my computer via battle.net. When I go to start the game it says to insert the Play CD. My question is, how do I preform a update to the current patch to play the game without my CD, when the patch requires the Play CD too?
I thought when you downloaded from battle.net it came patched for the CD problem. I'm not about to go out and re-buy it because D3 is right around the corner. Any solutions?

This problem usually occurs if you install D2 through the CD and then attempt to down the expansion through battle.net, try and completely uninstall + delete your D2 folders, then reinstall EVERYTHING through battle.net digital installers.

To do a full installation from Battle.net's digital download, make sure you have registered both, Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, using your original CD-Keys:
1. Go to the Battle.net website and log in.
2. At the top of the page, click the "Account" tab.
3. Under "Game Accounts" you will see a list of games you have installed and registered.
4. Click the "Diablo II" link and you will see your 26-character Game Key and the date you registered Diablo II.
5. At the top of the page, click the "Account" tab.
6. Click the "Diablo II: Lord of Destruction" link and you will see your 26-character Game Key and the date you registered Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
If you have both Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction registered on Battle.net you can follow Darknesscalls-'s instructions to "completely uninstall + delete your D2 folders, then reinstall EVERYTHING through battle.net digital installers."
You should then be able to play D2 without the Play CD inserted in the drive (especially if you no longer have the original CDs).
