Seriously I didn't want to believe it but it looks pretty @##!ing grim right now.

Diablo II may be in production but DII is nothing but a heaping pile of #!#@ right now.

It could be said that Diablo 2 is done, but I'm pretty sure it's the Battle.net aspect. Battle.net has shown us in the past how much fun the game can be without cheating, but there is nothing stopping anyone from experimenting with this game single player. The only things missing from the single player aspect is Diablo Clone and Uber Tristram, but you can get mods for those to play single player.

With the number of times I've been suddenly booted off a game while playing a summoner or an assassin, it's become a serious consideration to just unlock the ladder content for SP and play with all sorts of builds.

Q u o t e:
Singleplayer is also missing several runewords but i dont mind.. The benefits outweigh the missing content..

There are programs you can download to edit the MPQ files and you can change the attributes to unlock the ladder-only content. You just wouldn't be able to play it online once you did, that's all. There's one or two guys on my f-list I don't mind talking to, or I'd likely have gone that way long ago.

If there was a shared stash, I wouldn't play online anymore but since I need to use mules for space I will continue online.

You can use 'Plug-Y' to enable a shared stash in single player.
This will also allow you to enable ladder only rune-words and a somewhat limited version of Uber Tristram.

You can also try ATMA for stashing but with that program you need to save the game before stashing, it's not integrated into the game itself (and be sure to grab up the 1.13 fix if you're gonne try this one).

Note that (as far as I know) those two programs can't work together because ATMA can't handle the changes Plug-Y makes to the stash.

I quit Diablo 2 Battle.Net a long time ago. I knew it was done, and it looks like it will stay like that.. all the freaking botters, d2jsp, spam.. it's just not tolerable.

I switched over to SP. Right now I'm playing Median XL (not using Plugy for this mod since it could have some problems). But for normal D2, I use Plugy on SP. I don't have to worry about all the bnet problems, and I can play different patch versions. 1.10 - 1.13, not really much difference. 1.09 - 1.10 is a huge change.. and honestly I started playing D2 back in 1st season of 1.10 (2003) but I played on a 1.09 private server back in 06-07 and it was awesome.. You could join a game and just leech exp from cows, you didn't have synergies so you could vary and play around with builds, so you didn't have to lock yourself into a particular chain. That's what you see now.. a bunch of people going in one way directions. Synergies would have been a powerful thing if they were implemented correctly. Median XL has a pretty simple but nice synergy implementation.

Also if you do play 1.09 on SP, you could make a TCP/IP game, and level a new character with one of your previous characters fairly easy, since you still can leech off more than 2 screens away.

I wonder how long they will actually keep the servers up after d3 comes out.

Thread title fail.

Plenty for real player groups to keep it alive for at least a hundred years.

Nope. That's an actual projection that people will still be able to play Diablo II in a hundred years, and that some will. That is not to say it will be on a server for worldwide consumption for that long, but only that it is such an epic, groundbreaking game that there will still be interest in it for a very long time to come. It will become part of the mythos of our era.

and yet you spend an inordinate amount of time here... on the "OLD" D2 forum?
how do you put it? "perhaps it's time to move on?"

"Will there be piles of bodies?"

I really would be interested in those projections. Reason being, technology changes so much so that things become incompatable for use. I would imagine technology will change significantly that certain things - likely the dynamics of computers and their functions will not permit the software to function. However, I do not want to excuse things like virtual and emulation that would make it so games and software would accessible. I am intrigued.

I speak only with the authority of my own estimations. Technology will indeed change and older platforms will die out as new mutations propagate. Nevertheless, one hundred years is a relatively short enough time for there to remain a nostalgic need to maintain "backward compatibility" in the race to the future. Witness the emulators for our oldest of video games available now, even 30 years out of the gate.

To add to my projection: we should still be able to find references to it for another 100-200 years after the initial hundred years. Then, as most everything else in contemporary human experience, it will return to dust; though I imagine there will be at least one museum dedicated to early human digital computation devices which may retain the title in its catalog of turn-of-the-millennium gaming history. It has set some pretty impressive benchmarks which can't be taken away from it.

My thoughts are a work in progress, so please excuse the mental dust.

I do not want to [exclude] things like virtual and emulation.

As well you shouldn't. Among the first few of the 13,200 results of this search:

http://www.google.com/search?&q=trs+80+lunar+lander

are just a few samples:

The text version of 40 years ago predates even the TRS-80 graphical version I remember, it seems.

Moria (30 years old) still has its own newsgroup (rec.games.roguelike.moria).

My thoughts are a work in progress, so please excuse the mental dust.
