i have been working on a custom map project where is use custom models. i have run into a major problem with size limitations though. with models for 3 full tech trees the size reached over 5 megabytes. that is without more than perhaps 2 custom unit models. that means that unless the maximum size of maps or compression is changed i cant complete my project.
But keep in mind that human patience limits map size to 60kb or less! People downloading over battle.net almost never stay if it goes too slow. You shouldn't make a big map, it will have a hard time getting popular.
The part where you say
Q u o t e: with models for 3 full tech trees the size reached over 5 megabytes. that is without more than perhaps 2 custom unit models
is confusing. Do you have two 2.5MB models or what? That is way too big for a model by the way.
I wrote you a poem about custom models:
A good map uses them sparingly.
A great map uses none.
It has a good rhyme to it and ends with a bang! (Punch line.)
Gameplay comes first, graphics come last. Warcraft 3 is an old game.
i have buildings for 3 tech trees but very few units. there is a custom skin that takes slightly over 1 megabyte. blizzard should add better packing and support for bigger maps. i am able to get a full game most of the time.
I do have this problem at times though, especially for the people in my modding community as well.
I really do hope that Blizzard would increase the file size limit for custom maps to further develop and bring even more people into the Warcraft community.
With DotA still continuing its legacy even after Dota 2, I'm sure IceFrog would require some extra space to make the game even more interesting for newer players who want to get the game.
Thanks in advance, I'm supporting this idea of an increased limit too.
