Ok so I've been wanting to play Diablo 2 again so I re bought it last night. However, I'm also having this stupid graphical issue with win 7 x64... I've searched and tried everything I know to do.. I've changed compatibility to 98/ME, XP SP2 and 3, etc. etc.. I've run it as admin, 256 colors, disabled the visual theme, etc. etc.. If I do those the screen just goes black and I have to reboot my computer via power button which I hate doing. I have also tried changing my screen res lower than 1920x1080 but again I get nothing but a black screen. I've tried keeping the screen res box open as some people say to work for some reason.
So what the **** am I suppose to do? It's driving me nuts.. And no, saving and quitting and logging back in does not work. And I'm not resorting to doing that anyway as you spawn back in town anyway.
So any help is greatly appreciated. I'm not wasting $40 on something not worth playing.. And with these "rainbow colored" errors, it's not worth it.
please refer to this link to see what I'm talking about. http://www.imagebam.com/image/cf4e20116286428
Set compatibiliy settings to WinXP, disable desktop composition, disable designs and run as Administrator. This clears most game related problems. Looking at your screenshot it seems you got a more basic problem with your gfx card and/or it's drivers.
Do you use the current gfx driver for your gfx card?
Did you update your DirectX after the gfx driver installation?
Did you run the games vid-test tool to check which display modes of the game are supported?
Which display mode did you select to run the game in?

Can you try forcing the game to run in Direct3D mode from the Diablo II video test? That should let it run full screen mode a lot better. If not, there's always the Windowed mode option.
Right-click on the shortcut you use to start Diablo II and select "Properties"
You should see a target line in the new window that is already highlighted.
Add -w to the end of what is already there, be sure that there is a space between the hyphen and the end-quote and that there is a space.
It should look similar to this:
"C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Diablo II.exe" -w
Well I'm pretty sure my cards up to date. I'm running a GeForce 220GT 1GB VRAM.
I'm running the game full screen 800x600. I have not tried changing it to windowed mode, however.
And normally when I change to disable the visual themes, etc. I just get that black screen and nothing happens, which forces me to reboot. And yes I've run the video test.

This indicates that the game tries to use a gfx mode your system does not truly support.
