  • 0. Reinstalling Starcraft - Need Help w/ errors   12/03/2009 07:35:37 PM PST
Hi there,

I'm recently trying to reinstall Starcraft because it wasn't loading and was giving an error.

But now, when I reinstall it, it gives me an error. The following is the full message of the error:

The installer was unable to read the file "C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Desktop\Starcraft\SC-1.15.2-enUS\Installer Tome.mpq". This error may be caused by problems with the media or drive at C:\--for example, a scratched or dirty CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, hard drive corruption, or a networking problem while downloading the installer. (The data being read was "Common\StarDat.mpq", and the error code was 5.) If this problem persists, please contact Blizzard Technical Support. (Converter::Load)

I've tried doing the troubleshooting articles in the support page, including the Error 5 and Stardat.mpq articles, but it wasn't helping me.

I could use some help here!

Thanks!!

Are you using the Digital Downloads or the actual CD's?

I tried Digital Download. I also tried it twice too.

I used first the installer that I had when I downloaded this game a year ago.

After that failed, I downloaded another installer, it also failed and same error message.

Moochi,

Try creating a folder on your C drive, say called Games, and then a StarCraft folder inside it and have the downloader use it instead of your desktop.

You'll need to delete a registry key first though in order to get it to let you choose another location.

If you're familiar with registry editing, delete the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Downloader

If you've not done this before, let me know and I'll provide a step by step way for you to do this. It's better not to experiment with registry editing as you can do a lot more harm than good if you make a mistake.

Also, you need to be sure you're logged into the pc on an admin account. If you're on Vista, you also need to right click the downloader (and game icon later) and select the option to run as an admin.

Thanks for the reply!

I've not done this before so I could use the step by step help.

I'm also using Windows XP if that also helps you.

Also, the error that I encountered when I launched the game BEFORE I tried reinstalling the game was this:

Invalid data file version number rez/cdversion.txt

It might help in your diagnosis or something. Thanks again!

Moochi,

I'll assume you're able to make the folders I mentioned already.

To make the registry change:

Click Start > Run > type in "regedit" without the quotes and hit enter

In the registry Editor screen that comes up, on the left side, click the + sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER

Click the + sign next to Software

Click the + sign next to Blizzard Entertainment

You should see an entry called Downloader now.

Right click that icon and select delete

Select the yes button to confirm

Close the editor and start up the downloader again and it'll prompt for a location to install the game

If any of my steps don't seem to coincide with what you see, stop and let me know, Don't guess..

Hello there again,

I'm still having problems reinstalling the game. The error is still the same:

The installer was unable to read the file "C:\Games\Starcraft\StarCraft 1.15.2 enUS Installer\Installer Tome.mpq".

It did get farther in installing though than last time, it reaches 5% of installation before stopping. :(

I could use help again!

Thanks!

Moochi,

You may have an antivirus or other security app stopping it from working.

Booting the computer in Safe Mode may help you around this problem. To do this, please follow the instructions for your Windows version found here:

Hello,

I'm having problems now with running the installer now in Safe Mode.

When the installer starts, the End User License Agreement comes up blank and the window is all gray.
Like the words aren't there and the scroll bar on the side isn't there and I can't scroll down.

Thanks

Moochi,

Have you kept your system updated by running Windows Update periodically? If you have another browser installed, try setting it to be the default and try. Another user fixed this by installing the latest release of Adobe Reader so you may want to check that too. If none of this helps, let's go back and boot regularly but this time use selective startup so background apps won't be running.

Selective Startup:

Click Start and select Run, then type "msconfig" and click OK.
In the General tab:

1. Choose Selective Startup
2. Disable (uncheck) Load startup items
3. Click OK and Reboot

When you are booting your computer in Selective Startup, please keep in mind that you are disabling every application that normally starts up with your computer. This may include firewall and security software that you would normally want to have on. After you are finished testing, you should re-enable your security software.
