Skill trees gone? I think it is a bad idea, depending on what way they do it though.
If it uses a system like Sacred, then it would be terrible.

Skill trees were already essentially gone. They were only around as a sorting method. Blizzard removed prerequisites so you could get any skill for any tree as long as you were the right level.

This is a good thing.
Now instead of having the "usable" active skills limited to only the bottom half of the skill tree, they should all be relatively balanced now.
Essentially, the number of active skills we could use for late game doubles.

WOW! You think it is a bad idea without even knowing what they did? I will just wait and see what have they actually done before starting to nay-say yet another possible improvement made by the dev team.

How so? Do you know how they changed them and what will they be doing?

It would be great if we the Diablo 3 WarCraft development team could at least get some hint of what is going on behind the scenes. Would be epic to try this new system out for our map. :D

More like Torchlight saw D3 demos at blizzcon and what ever - stole how their trees worked but now Blizzard doesnt like them for what ever reason and has decided to change them again

No skill trees? Sounds good to me. Less restrictions on skill choices means more freedom in building characters. The removal of all skill redundancies and any less-than-awesome tree-filler skills... Two thumbs up.

We don't even know the new system yet :(

(Diablo 2 [3 - 2] + 1) x 7 + 5 divided by 8 - 2 + ([-6] x 6 - [-37]) x 6.02 x 10^23 = 1 Mol of Diablo 3

i dont see the connection at all...
if one set of skills is more powerful/effective than the rest, people are going to figure out the "best build" and it will be common place. this has nothing to do with how the skills are arranged, but the fact that if one skill kills faster in every given situation, thats the skill every one will end up using.

Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now.

And I hope all of the skills are balanced and damage is mostly based on your level so that all the skills will be pretty balanced and it ends up merely a choice of playstyle

More like... SHUTUP! Torchlight is a rehash of Diablo 2 from a company that holds onto their stupid dreams from a game that was made 10 (?) years ago instead of just giving up and trying something flipping new.

I don't know how anyone can say either.

Good? Bad? Compared to what?

They obviously have to give us a bit more info on what they are intending. I know it is probably to early to get much info on what system they are deciding on, for all we know they have 5 other systems that are competing to see which is the most appropriate.

Let's hope Bash can provide us a little sneak peek at what they have in mind. Maybe a SS of the what they are using now, a brief description on how they are moving forward, even some cryptic foreshadowing ;p.

People sure are running wild with interpreting what it could be, which is fun for us to read at least. :)

We'll see how it works out. It's still really only been tested in ideas and theory and messy whiteboard scribblings. Might be that it just doesn't work and we go back to the system we had post-Blizzcon, which in reality worked just fine. But we think we can one-up it a bit.

We've been iterating the entire time so really the newest tweet about trees going away wasn't the first hint, but it certainly contained a more concrete change in its text.

Oct 14th - "Skill system currently undergoing a new functionality and UI iteration. Nothing too radical... but it will be rad. Brosef."
