I noticed in the 2009 broll that the characters walk through each other, this was not the case in d2.

I like the realism of solid characters, anyone agree?

Actually I think it's a clever gameplay decision. It's annoying when you're crawling a dungeon and somebody blocks a door that prevents you from getting in (or worse, preventing you from getting out). It will make cooperative games more fluid and enjoyable.

This only happened in a few places maggot lair and arcane bieng the worst, but from what ive seen so far d3 seems to have open areas. it is still early days though.

I hope they make it like TF2, where when you stand on an ally you get quickly pushed away from the centre of the other character but not enough so it affects you when you walk through someone, just so you don't stand on top of each other.

This is okay with summons, but not with your hero.
You shouldn't be able to pass through each other, it's not like you can simply pass straight through a swarming mob of monsters.
It lowers the realism, when you start bobbing in and out of your teammate's model when going down a corridor or corner, and it REALLY bugged me when I noticed this in the demo and gameplay vids.
I just hoped it was deactivated for dev purposes or just cause it's in early development, and that they'll change it in the future.
I'm not worried that they won't have it, since it's pretty much a common sense thing.

No. This is rarely a problem, only in Maggot's Lair in D2 and that was one of the poorest gameplay level designs ever made.
Also there's only 4 players per game, most rooms have two openings, each class has a movement skill at ~lvl 20, and aside from Maggot's Lair I've never had this problem in my 8+ years of playing D2.

I thought this thread would be about Tutorials or strategy guides. Original Poster, the term you're looking for is "clipping". Clipping is when an object moves through another object. In many FPS games, having NoClip enabled means you can fly around and go through walls, usually done by developers to examine geometry.

If a player can block another player from moving through a door... then that is a griefer tactic waiting to happen. I say that characters should never be able to block each other, but if possible (if there is space) avoid clipping each other.

Uh, have you ever played Diablo 2? If so, has this EVER happened to you?

We have enough anti-griefing mechanics as it is.
Crying about the small possibility of someone locking you into a room is starting to get ridiculous.
Gameplay atmosphere should NOT be sacrificed for such a small and trivial chance for griefing.

NoClip for allies just looks bad, feels unrealistic, and it's a bit annoying.
I remember purposely diverting to the side whenever a teammate happened to "synch" our running paths together in the D3 demo, because it just looked unrealistic/unprofessional/glitchy whenever it happened.

Usually it was just some idiot standing in the way... but griefers in D2 don't need to do that kind of thing because there are much more disruptive tactics that they can use (PK...). Without hostility in D3, small things like this will be the griefer's only option for spreading malcontent. I say, deny them even this possibility.

It's not fun to be blocked by someone supposedly on your side, so why allow it? Your opinion seems to be that the aesthetics matter more... I don't care about the aesthetics as much as game-play. Simply a difference of opinion.

Or team mates can't block each other... in a duel you aren't teamed with your opponent.

good point, but this is a big issue for me, it really grinds my gears when I watch the 2009 broll and characters are clipping like crazy.

its still early days, they might have plans for no clipping.

Also you can not stop on a player if they are blocking the path.

I would think some path finding test where if projected path exceeds the distance to target by a great margin (to allow for round about paths) noclip is enabled.

I would like a solid character even though its no big deal if they're not. As long as they don't make tight dungeons like the maggot lair.

 Try to say "BRITISH SOLDIER".

easy solution, give every character their own enigma for starting gear

no? ok how about just make sure there are no poor game designs like the mag lair and make doors big enough to fit 2-3 characters through at once.

Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now.

For the co-op game allowing players to clip through each other just makes for a better and more enjoyable experience. You're already dealing with enemies surrounding you and blocking movement, there's no reason for your friends to do the same.

Of course clipping wouldn't be able to work the same way in PvP situations, but we're not talking about that yet. :)
