I downloaded the monk's 12 min gameplay trailer couple weeks after Blizzcon was out and I noticed this pillar instantly, except I didn't say anything until now, mainly being I never seen it mentioned before, regardless if it's all that important or not.
Figured it might spark some convo, but since I found that it didn't do anything apparent, it's probably just one of those environmental ambient things...
good eye, i never noticed the pillar till now.
would be cool if it were tied into a quest or lore, but it is likely just a bit of ambiance. seems to be the same general area/architecture as tal's chamber, so it could just be a common feature in the upcoming A2 tombs of diablo3
Hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now.

You can also hear three very dramatic piano notes/strings being played in sequence right before the column rises.
That sound leads me to believe it's some kind of trap, and not just something that's part of the scenery.
The monk seems to go out of the trap's proximity, so it falls back down without doing anything.
Edit:

The skeleton on the far left that you happen to KILL and send flying several feet, instantly revives/reassembles himself then LAUGHS at you!
Pretty damn sweet.
Those undead look a lot like 'The Returned' from Act 5. They had a charge ability and a chance to reanimate themselves after you killed them. My guess is that is why some of them were getting back up, either that or there is another creature that can resurrect undead in the vicinity.

Yeah, they may just have been knocked down and not killed.
Still really cool though for the laughing tidbit, and since it looks like they're a pile of bones when knocked down.
This place seems to have mechanized and magical defenses, still working, despite the place looking like it could collapse in on itself at any moment. The question truly is then, what is this place, and for what purpose was it built? We'll likely never* know.
*Never is defined as the length of time before the game is released.
