  • 0. So about that fifth class?   11/03/2009 10:18:51 AM PST
I remember before blizzcon 09 everyone was in a buzz about how someone mentioned that they've already finished the class ideas and that all they needed to do was to finalize them. In fact I remember another post where someone sourced that the last class was something that they wanted in D3 since the beginning.

I was just curious as to why they only waited like 3 weeks after blizzcon 08 to release the wizard, and yet they've only released one class (the monk) in the past 13 months.

And yeah I understand that there are other things that they are working on like the other 3 acts, and monsters, and lore and such. But wouldn't the logical thing be to get the characters and the HUD done first before completing the rest of the game?

I would also understand if they were done the class and they just didn't want to release it for secrecy and hype value, but just the fact that it's done would be pretty nice to know.

!?

Well the game was originally announced with the barbarian and witch doctor. BlizzCon '08 saw the announcement of the wizard (at BlizzCon, not three weeks after), and BlizzCon '09 saw the announcement of the monk.

The fifth class was something that was decided early on, but after continuing to work on the game and the other classes it just wasn't up to standards any longer. So it's back on the drawing board.

We only have one class left to reveal, it's sort of a major card we can still hold close to the vest. While development doesn't depend on our plans to reveal it, we definitely aren't going to tell everyone what it is just because we know what it's going to be.

Yes, but the longer the wait, the more the hype dies as well. Don't know how the rest of you feel, but my hype died a long time ago - I'm just on these boards out of old habit. :'<

...You can always tell it to me though, I can keep a secret :>

Seriously though, I hope it's put off for the next Blizzcon or whatever other major Blizzard event that may pop up. It always makes the individual games a lot more exciting to follow, at for example Blizzcon, if you have a feeling that they've got something major to show.

One thing though, a desire if you want. I wonder if Blizzard has any plans to make the infamous demo avaliable to the masses at some point. I'd kill to try even the most simple demo of D3, but it's always only showcased at Blizzcon and other big events - way out of my reach >.<
So would there be any possibility of Blizzard throwing some small demo out at some point to feed our hunger? I mean it's a long way to release, and I am (and I guess most others) pretty hyped already :P

It's sad because it's true...

On the other hand, having the hype die down a bit isn't such a bad thing considering the greater the hype, the more blizzard has to live up to. Not that they can't but there have been games in the past that probably would have been considered at least a little better than what they were perceived thanks to overhyping their product (aka. Hellgate:London)

Little tidbits here and there are fine, I think if anything knowing the 5th class or at least seeing some solid representation of the female monk and male wizard would give some closure as to it's development. So far it seems things are progressing veeeeerrrryyy slowly...

It's too risky, someone can copy the game engine as well as ingame contents that they put in so much work with already.

Besides, unless it is released as an extremely limited beta testing near the end of game development, it will act as a leak for the hype instead because many will just go "wait so this is it? I was expecting much much better gameplay/contents/graphics/etc" while the actual game was not nearly polished/ decided yet.

With any luck, BlizzCon 2010 will be the day D3 is released or something.

No on twitter they said that they are working on act 2. I think that the fifth class will be revealed at blizzcon 2010 then at blizzcon 2011 they'll say that the third act is nearly finished and will give us a release date.

I'm actually secretly a Blizzard employee, so you can tell me what the class is. Don't worry, you're allowed.

Just so you know... I'm cool.

I figured you were going to say something like that. So the class isn't completed yet because of recent developments to the game?

I do have to agree with the rest of the crowd, I was really hyped at blizzcon but now I barely come to the forums. Just every now and then out of habit.

Thanks for clearing up the history of the classes though. I appreciate it.

I think that because (to me) the hype has gone down so much (I barely hear anyone talk about D3 on the web anymore) there should be another demo video showing the newest hud from con09 and a play test of the monk and wizard. Maybe a new skill or two. Like the official demo with the barb and WD on the main D3 page.

The one on the front page isn't even real anymore because the game has changed so much. Not only would it stir the hype back up, but it would get rid of the fallacy that is the "official gameplay demo".
