  • 0. Torchlight featureset in Diablo3?   10/27/2009 12:36:25 PM PDT
First,

Credit for all of this goes to the makers of Torchlight and the Giantbomb guys. The video that GB made can be found here:

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-torchlight/17-1551/

After viewing their quicklook of Torchlight, there are some glaring, awesome features that I would REALLY like to see implemented in Diablo3. Conflict of interest potential here I know because of the Runic guys having worked on the original Diablo games and, well, these two games are likely to be direct competitors of each other. Also, some of this may have already been addressed by Blizzard/these forums, but please bare with me and thanks for your patience:

1.) Shared lock-boxes: In town, there are 2 chests (as opposed to 1 in Diablo). The first chest is simply your current character's storage. The second chest is a shared lock-box; e.g. if you're loot hunting with your melee-based character and happen to find an awesome mage/caster weapon you can go back to town and put that in your shared box, exit game, load up your mage and find it waiting for you as soon as you come into town. Now, there could be some tricky business with the way this is implemented online (Torchlight is offline-only currently). But not having to worry about muling in Diablo3 is an ABSOLUTE MUST-have feature in my opinion.

2.) Mercenary(pet) Inventory space: When you pull up your pet's inventory, you'll find a screen identical to your own. Not only are rings, amulets, etc. are all equip-able, but your pet has its own inventory space as well. Simply shift-left-clicking items in your inventory will send them directly to your pet's inventory. Which leads us to the best part:

3.) Mercenary(pet) item selling: With 1 click your pet is sent off to town to sell your un-needed loot back to the NPC's. Instead of casting a town portal and going back yourself, your pet does the work whilst you remain in the dungeon hacking away. This process takes about 1 minute, after which your pet will return to you in the dungeon and report how much gold was just added to your stash.

Yes, calling a merc a pet is weird for me also, but that is what they are called in Torchlight. And again, sorry if these ideas have already been addressed here. I didn't see anything along the likes of this discussion in the Blizztracker at diablofans.com.

Thanks for the time,
Neight

I would hate if they had any of those things.. except maybe the box between chars.. but I would prefer some other system to do that..
The pet who sells things is just stupid..
And a mercenary who holds your items is stupid as well.. who would give valuable items to a mercenary to hold.. you couldnt trust them..

There has been some talking about shared lockbox for the characters in your account for Diablo 3, so at least that will probably be there since now it has been mule characters that has been doing that job and everyone knows that 1 extra box is a lot better way :)

I have torchlight, I have tried it, while Id agree that it is quick and efficient and lets you continue to stay in the action.. I still do not like it

We all play a lot of games so it's without question that if someone finds a feature in some game they enjoy, or encounters something especially cool, we'll see if it could work for us.

Regarding mercenaries, the most we've said is that for Diablo III we have them and we're calling them followers... and that's all we've said. So I couldn't comment on what features they would or wouldn't have or speculate on if a feature would work for us or not. You'll just have to wait and see.

We've said since announcement that we want to make sure you can get items to other characters quickly and safely. It could take any number of forms, an account-shared stash is one option we've talked about.

These aren't really new ideas, not to discount them being fun or useful additions to any game, but there's always something to learn. We also just like having an excuse to play more games.

Pets that sell stuff for you is a terrible idea. You're right, you'd never have to sift through the items or use a town portal. So you'll grab every single item that drops. That devalues the loot in general. You stop making choices about what to keep and what to ignore. You'll also never go back to town, which means you'll be less likely to listen to NPCs or buy things.

The thing they did wrong with the pets was that the dog takes an entire eternity to get back to you. Every level you go down increased his time by like 10 seconds. Eventually it takes like 3 mins for him to get back, but it's like when he is gone you really need him. Because he is suppose to help you kill stuff and you are weaker without him. I think the best solution is have a vendor at the start of the level stairs and the stairs going down.

We've said since announcement that...

sounds like you are tired to talk about these "Pls bring this feature in Diablo 3" topics =)

I like that you can bind skills on F-keys.
In D3 you can bind only 2 skills on RMB, changed by tab-key. I think switching skills on RMB by F-keys is a better choise. It would be easy to start playing D3 after long D2 experience.. and more skills to bind.

A shared loot chest is an obvious choice for sharing items between characters. I don't see a need to make it any more complicated than that. It's not as if swapping things between characters adds to gameplay or enjoyment, it's purely admin, so make it simple stupid.

Lots of the game is going down really well http://forums.diii.net/showthread.php?t=746417. I've only played it a couple hours myself so far and it's well-paced and fun - might be a bit colourful for some ;p

People have been adding features in " Torchlight that you'd like to see in Diablo 3" http://forums.diii.net/showthread.php?t=746555 - shared stash was obviously mentioned more than once and some like the idea of your merc selling your stuff. I'm undecided on that one as yet.

I think a simple stash ala the one in Torchlight would be too small for Diablo. It works in Torchlight where there's just three classes - and it's offline play only (so not much reason to save stuff).
But in Diablo III I can easily imagine having several characters of each class, thus creating a desire to store a ton of different items, and there's the huge trading aspect of the game. I personally am expecting something a little bigger in size, and possibly even something that can expand in size through bags or such.
And if they end up using the tetris model for items again then stash sizes really get cut down in effective size.

I agree. Diablo 3 will sport bags so I think it should be sort of like the WoW bank, except that huge bank is shared. Then you can buy more space to upgrade the size of the chest. Two chests though seems a little wierd. You will end up using the shared stash as a normal stash then have to sort things out. I'd like it if the shared aspect of a stash was you simply right click on the item then it brings up your list of characters, click that character and it gets sent to him. Then you can just skip the shared stash all together. Just have a different stash on each character that you can keep expanding.

Sweet. Then pretty pretty please forward/explain to the team how awesome the item "enchantment" (upgrade in HG:L) system is. I will write an essay on why it should be in Diablo 3 (and every ARPG) just as a warning. You do not want this to happen!

I preferred it in HG:L though because it also required scrap parts which you could obtain from breaking down items you didn't want, thus taking them out of the economy. At least I think that's how it worked. I haven't played it for a while.

What about the wii... say what you will about the graphics (and you're probably right to question them)... Nintendo has found a way to bring the fun like no one else has this generation...
