0. TCP/IP issues with Diablo II: LoD 10/29/2009 05:08:28 PM PDT

Me and my girlfriend are trying to play D2 together but every time we try to connect through TCP/IP it says "Cannot connect to server." I attempt the whole pinging situation as suggested by Blizzard's support page, and lo and behold I have issues pinging her and any other site or network,etc, saying "Request timed out". I've made exceptions in my Windows Firewall, turned off any and all firewall-type programs and still nothing, and Blizzard says nothing about how to fix this kind of issue, just tells you how to figure out if you have an issue.

Me and my gal realllly want to play. What can I do to fix this?

Are you both trying to play from within the same LAN, or different Networks?

I suggest bypassing the router by plugging the modem in directly to your computer. That will tell us if the source of the problem is your router or not.

It's a wireless modem for the two laptops I have, so my desktop (the one I'm trying to use to play) is plugged directly into by the modem by default. Strangely, when I try pinging on my laptop, it works fine but I still can't connect to a game. Though it has Vista, whilst my desktop has XP.

It doesn't have a name on the actual modem, but my ISP generally sticks with Netgear. I'm not sure. As for model, there's a whole bunch of numbers on the bottom, which specifically are you looking for?

Err...well I can try.

There's a tiny barcode, under it: EDHHZY8, under that U10C037.00 LF, under that E200044732 - 04L1
Slightly bigger barcode has all the FCC/CSA labels on it, number above FCC logo is U10C037, under the CSA logo is 188227, under them both it says Contains FCC ID: QDS-BRCM1016

Then there's two Cable RF MAC Address barcodes, and then below them are two WAN-DATA MAC Address barcodes, and under them is a Cable RF MAC Address, all the same number (00242b989404) and then the S/N number (92C1614002257), next to that is a DC number 120209. Those are all the numbers on the bottom.

If so, you need to check http://www.ubeeinteractive.com/user-guides/U10C019-U10C020_End_UserGuide_1.6-2009-02-20.pdf and check bottom of PDF page #33, then set port forwarding up for your computer. You need ports 6112 TCP/UDP and 4000 TCP forwarded. Once you do this, you can host a game on your computer. Find your computer's local IP address first and fill that in, then use 6112 for the internal port. I'm not sure why Public Interface IP isn't filled out by your device but... if it makes you fill it out, try visiting http://www.whatismyip.com/ to get it. Fill that out, then use 6112 for your ext start and forward ports. Both means TCP/UDP so pick that, then click on enabled. DO the same thing on rule #2 for port 4000.

If your girlfriend wants to host her games, she will need to do it too on whatever setup she has. Once you're through, make sure the Windows Firewall (and any internet security software you may have) is set up correctly, too. http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=20797

That looks a hellova lot like it, sans the Ubee logo on it. I will try this, thank you very much. Hopefully she'll have time today to test it out and I can let you know if it worked.

Update: She says that it still doesn't work when she tries to join my games.

Update 2: Oops, I forgot to input the last two digits of my LAN IP. hehe, my bad. We got it to work finally! Thank you very much!

Keep in mind that if you host games using this method, your computer will actually be the server and she'll be connecting to you. If she doesn't exit first when you two are done, she'll get disconnected and might lose a couple minutes worth of stuff.
