hello,
i think it would be great, if played could hover mouse on his dmg output to see popup with each element.

E.G.:

Dmg: 500-800
-------------------
Phys 300-500
Fire 80-100
Frost 80-100
Lightning 1-50
Poison 39-50

What do you think? I think it's quite missing in D2, you just see it coloured by one of elements you deal but gives you no insight into your "immune-fighting-capabilities"

ive been suggesting this since day 1.

in diablo 2, you basically see only the resulting damage. everything else, the crits, the open wounds, elemental damage, etc, is nowhere visible in-game. you have to go the arreat summit to know what open wounds really means. also its obscure with which skills critical strike works. there is a huge field of improvement, so to say for diablo 3.

"I thought today was Opposite Day..."
- "It's not Opposite Day!"
"So that means...it is Opposite Day?!"

Seems simple enough, knowing the values instead of just the sum.

This certainly has been suggested before, but since it is such a simple and much needed/wanted suggestion, it is also certainly worth suggesting again.

I agree.

Well good news then, this has been part of the character sheet for a long time now. I don't foresee any reason why we'd remove it, but in any case just the normal disclaimer of this being a work in progress.

An example!

I have a barbarian with a halberd that adds 1-9 lightning damage in addition to its other stats. I mouse over his attack in the character sheet and it breaks down the damage for me in a tooltip:

Q u o t e:
Total Damage - "54.2 - 164.6"
- -
Physical Damage - "27.0 - 79.0"
- Physical Damage Bonus - "26.2 - 76.6"
Lightning Damage - "1.0 - 9.0"

And in researching this example I just found a bug, so it was a win-win situation for everyone.

Oh and the physical damage bonus is from Strength.

Snazzy. Will this eventually factor in hit, crit or any of those things that would affect effective damage dealt?

I assume hit and crit will be shown else where on the character sheet. Possibly working similar to how WoW does it. For example I believe "Spell Power" showed the strongest school, so if you had +2000 Spell power, +50 fire damage, and +100 frost damage, your spell power would be shown as 2100. However mousing over this number would show 2100 frost, 2050 fire and the rest at 2000. The same is done with hit and crit since talents (maybe tier bonuses too) can raise specific spell schools.

YAY! Thanks for chiming in, Bashiok.

So, I take it that damage is reported in a per-hit manner, rather than DPS.

Will there be an additional readout for the maximum potential DPS?

Even on spells, it might be interesting to see how much damage could be expected incorporating cooldown times and whatnot.

I don't think that this will happen because it would reduce all skills to one glare at the DPS rate. This would be a great loss for the game because all spells would have to do the same DPS in the end, otherwise nobody would use them ;) And so nobody would experimentate with skills and combinations, which is the contraproductive to the aim of Blizz... I think... ^^
