Imagine you're reading a Diablo book or watching a Diablo movie! When you finish this, you're moving on to part two! Wouldn't be odd if the Barbarian said in any of those: ''Oh man, those were the good ol' days when I was lvl 99! Now, I'm back at lvl 1 and that just sucks!'' or ''OMG, how the hell can i have only 25 strength, I had 260 twenty years ago!''

It's a game mechanic!

The thing is levels and strength points do not exist in Lore, only in gameplay. So if you one day played Diablo 12437134237 would you want to play with lv498359495639570346570 and strength: 89345609234650136 OR would you still want to play with lv1-99 and strength: 340?

These are only numeral indicators on each game, they are of course differently related between instalments.

You really need to learn how to relativize.

The levels are indicators related to the beginning of each of the games, not the entire series. Specially when the World changed completely after a cataclysm and all power levels, laws and rules changed with it.

The barbarian surely wasn't the only one to survive. Cain was there as well, and he obviously made it off the mountain - rickety legs intact.

Tyrael did give fair warning before destroying the worldstone, so I'm sure there were others that escaped with their lives.

But not Larzuk. That dude is dead.

Marius: "I heard later that he was defeated... and the soulstone destroyed in hellforge."

Did you destroy Diablos soulstone? I sure as hell did not.

Well that's just GREAT, now thanks to you I'm gonna have to spend countless hours scouring the land of Sanctuary to find Larzuk as either an incredibly powerful zombie or the new demonic smith arming demons with cannons of fiery doom.

Just peachy...

As for the barb, let's put ourselves in his place:

he just defeated the prime evils and saved the world hurray!

The worldstone and sacred mountain is destroyed boo!

Barbarian society is now broken up (so the ones that are left are spread here and there)

for the next 20 years there are little to no demonic attacks anywhere

He has fought against the forces of hell, faced the lords of hatred, terror and destruction, heard the screams of the innocents as they were ripped to shreds by demons, seen horrors beyond imagining, he has almost certainly has scars that will never heal both out and in.

Sure he's massively powerful at the end but he is still human. Is it really that hard to imagine that the barbarian might have decided to retire and forget it all?

Well at least we'll have Halbu to keep us company. That guy was always such a bundle of laughs.

Speaking of him, was he even human?
I mean, what is a human (who isn't directly on a quest to kill Diablo) doing at the last bastion of heaven which is situated right next to hell?

It's not like angels dragged his ass there just to repair your armor... or did they...?

Ummm... there's a mystery afoot....

Can't we just assume that D3:Normal is like D2:Hellx2? The destruction of the worldstone perhaps made the monsters we'll face much tougher. So a 99barb 20 years aged from D2 will be like starting over in D3 anew -- to simplify things Blizzard decided to reset the relative level back to 1. So the barb can get stronger again, unless you want to play a weak lvl99 barb from D2 in D3 - you'd totally get pwned by a lvl 5 zombie.

In that case, It would probably be funny playing a Monk in D2 even at level 1 he'd tear up everything.

im sure bash cant tell us anything, but in spite of sounding annoying, it will be explained in d3 what happened, so all we have to do is wait another 2 years to find out the answer...sigh
