If you're talking about gold dropping from monsters, you can't have an algorithm running numbers off the gold of other players because your drops are for you only. Everything you see on your screen is yours. Unless gold is the one item/thing that everyone sees dropped. Then it would be funny to see the mad scramble for gold every time a monster is killed.

Q u o t e: DIABLO HAS BEEN ITEMS DRIVEN SINCE D1 AND IT SHOULD STAY ITEM DRIVEN IN D3.
You're crazy if you think the game won't continue to be item-driven. The only question is whether people will value gold enough to consider it a workable trading alternative to low- or mid-level items. It would be a good thing if it is, because then you won't have to engage in these stupid trading games where you have to list every single item you have to see if the other guy is interested in any of them.
The only thing I doubt is that they'll be able to encourage such a system if the size of gold drops varies widely based on a player's gear selection. If gold really mattered for anything in Diablo 2, then somebody with 3000% gold find would be at a gigantic advantage over somebody with 50%.
PGems worked pretty well as a currency primarily because they dropped fairly consistently for everybody, somewhat independent of gear or power. People with powerful gear or exceptional skill could certainly kill monsters more quickly, but that's the kind of advantage you expect out of an ARPG.

Q u o t e: the only thing a gld driven trade system woudl do is ruin the diablo franchise.
diablo has been item based since D1 to change it now would be n epic mistake.
think about it like this since everyone gets thier own drop's and gold is the econamy then whats the point of havin every one with thier own drops since now teh items are worthless and gold is all people want meaning low lvl items vanish from the server an only teh high lvl wirth a ton of gold !**# will be worth keeping.
so if your planin on makin gold worth somethign you might as well make drops public again cause they will be wortjless for trade value.
remeber bash this is not wow this is not an rts this is an rpg/action game and every rpg/action game gold is worthless as trade value.
DONT @!##IN DO IT.
IF YOU DO MAKE ITEMS DROP PUB AGAIN.
dont think i wont have a bunch of farmers pcikin up that 1 gold drop till 1 char has max gold like the WOW gold farmers do............thats another thing to look at no AH to spend the gold no reason for gold to be worth !**#..........

Edit:
As for the OP's idea, I'd say a layaway plan might be a better mechanic.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layaway
This would prevent the exploit of creating a temp character, getting something with a loan, giving that item to an alt, then deleting the temp character (and the debt).

I don't see how making gold more valuable will make low level items worthless. You can't wear gold. People will always need items, even low level items and to get items you haven't been able to find yourself you will need to trade for them. Maybe you swap items or maybe for gold. I don't see the disaster.
As for gold farmers, I don't see the difference from endless mf runs to get an inventory full of runes or sojs. The D2 economy naturally gravitated towards a common currency because it's easier than trying to barter miscellaneous items. "x for y sojs" Remember that?

The currency used for trade has absolutely no impact on item supply, and demand. A trade currency only facilitates trades, it does not determine trade value... players do that themselves.

Cant criticize a playstyle man. It's their prerogative. Some people like doing that.
Q u o t e: unfriendly to new players that are not established.
All economies are going to be prohibitive to new players. That's the nature of the beast.
Q u o t e: and once again diablo is still an item driven game. what do you use to get fg? items.....
whats is traded on the realm? items....what was traded in diablo 1? items....
whats the main focus of end game? items. whats the one thign that keeps people doin 1000's of baal runz? items.......
now tell me the game is nto based around items and gearing your char.
Fixed your punctuation so that people could maybe get some semblance of a clue about what you're trying to say.
Anyway, just because those things are currently done does not mean they are the better ways nor that a gold economy will not work. Also, yes, the game is based around items and gearing your character... but how you concluded that a gold economy would not work from that statement I have no idea. Your argument is terribad, that's all there is to it.
Q u o t e: also take another look at wow.....there are no lowbie items in the ah go look and anything that is there cost an arm and a leg....and is usually either blue or purple and nothing in between....very uninviting for new players just starting out......don't sned the same bad idea's from wow over to diablo 3 like bop and boe items and gold driven ah economy.....now i would agree boe and bop quest items and rewards but not bop or boe drops that is just stupid to have in a diablo game...
btw im established wow player playing since the game first came out.
I find your last statement hard to believe. Just to prove you wrong I logged on and went to the AH. I checked all of the armor pieces under level 20. There were about 20 pages of stuff with almost all of the prices for the armor being 2g or less which, even at those levels, is not prohibitive. You're not supposed to be able to buy out the AH to outfit your character at level 20, but it would be possible to get at least one or two pieces. Different games with different game mechanics and different restrictions cannot be compared.

As long as gold is useful for end game builds, I think it can be a currency. Sorta like how chipped gems could be used to make iirc 2 empty socked swords with high damage and attack rate.
More ideally though, I'm kinda hoping d3 has some sorta auction house system to trade gear. Being able to put stuff on the market or search for said gear would be way better than going into a trade chat channel and looking for the item you want within massive amounts of spam. That kind of system alone would make gold a viable currency as long as gold was rareish enough that you couldn't just easily cap out your gold after a few hours of playing. Put in some good ways to sink the gold like upgrading equipment and gambling, and you hopefully won't have too much in the way of inflation either.
