I was just thinking about how gold could become more valuable. What if we would be able to buy weapons or armor by borrowing if we are short? Then we would be able to buy items we are close to being able to afford without having to leave town and have it disappear on us. We would not be able to buy anything else in town, gamble, or have weapons and armor repaired until the debt was repaid.

An interesting idea to be sure, but it wouldn't make gold more valuable unless there was a borrowing fee or interest calculated for the amount borrowed.

Gold will continue to be worthless as long as players have an option to drastically increase the size of gold drops.

Gold will continue to be valuable as long as we have the option to drastically increase the amount needed to buy a desired item/feature.

c how that werk?

We know that the cost of respecs might increase exponentially, but are you considering having the price of some items to proportionally increase with the level of the buyer?

A level 30 character buying level 30 gear will likely have the same, if not more, difficulty as a level 5 character buying level 5 gear. I don't think I have ever played a game where this is not true.

I'm *extremely* skeptical, to say the least. I generally give you guys a lot of credit for doing great work, and I don't know what you have planned for the Magic-Find/Gold-Find/Rune-Find/etc. mechanics, but... if it's anything like Diablo 2, then giving players the ability to increase the natural gold drops by a factor of 20x makes it fairly challenging to balance in such a way that it won't severely penalize either new players or players who choose not to specialize in gold-finding. Particularly if the solution is, as you suggest, just to make everything incredibly expensive.

EDIT: I should probably add that I phrased my post incorrectly. I know that it's well within the dev's power to make gold both important and very scarce. What I dispute is whether this is a good idea, in the presence of items or other mechanics that drastically increase the drop rate of gold.

Considering how debt is effectively able to cripple people's finances in real life, I can see such a system working to drain money out of the virtual economy. The only question is...will there be virtual repos? Grind more gold or lose your uber sword of super awesomeness?

I have an issue, that many people ive talked to in diablo and wow have too. This problem is being very obsessive about making the most gold possible with regards to drops. Meaning we obsess over every thing that drops and want to return back to a town to sell it if out bags get full.

This being said, i would like a system more like D2 where gold is not such a big deal. I want it to be a bit more valuable, but not too much. This way i can see a green and just keep on going without worrying about needing that gold, trying to make room in bag to pick it up, then going back to town and coming back to spot i found it and keep doing my quest. I just want to be able to make an easy choice to let that green go and keep moving on so i dont slow down gameplay.

Soon enough, Bashiok? That's not soon enough!!

The point of gold having value is so you can trade for other items much easier. If you have a problem with picking up every item you find don't do it, leave the cheap stuff and pick up the expensive stuff, you know kinda like most people do after they play awhile. At first it may seem worth it to pick up that magic axe but eventually it just becomes pocket change and not worth the effort.

I think the problem here was related more to the extremely small inventory than to the desire to make some extra gold.

The ability to quickly make it back to town to sell the stuff is what allowed people to pick everything up. That ability has been removed right? no more tps...

On a personal note, I didn't find too much value in gold in D2. Throughout the entire game, the only times I would use it would be to repair my gear or revive my merc. But even then, I would have more than enough gold to do so after 1 or 2 boss runs. So the only thing I hated about dying was losing experience. Looking at WoW or other RPG games, there was a larger emphasis on gaining gear through merchants. Also, the amount you made from selling gear was almost 1/3 of the price you would buy it from them, unlike D2, it was pretty close to how much you sold it to them. In my opinion, make the merchant's more dynamic to increase the amount of interaction for better potential items. Heck, if I could pay Charsi to imbue items for me, I would be spending more gold on it.

no more tps...
Did I miss something that gave everyone reason to believe that TPs have been completely removed? Or have people sort of picked up the notion and run off with it without having verified its veracity?

Last I heard, TPs were going to be overhauled and significantly limited, but certainly not removed.

That's probably because gold simply didn't have much value in D2 for anyone. It wasn't just you. =P

I believe it was in the press faq given at blizzcon. Check my facts, I could be wrong, but I also remember them saying somewhere that there would be no more tps. Keep in mind that everything is still subject to change.

Googled for Blizzcon Diablo 3 press faqs. Found some interesting tidbits, but nothing about TPs.

I would be very disappointed if that feature will be repairing equipment .

A way to make gold more valuable could also be to base the gold drop rate of monsters ingame be based on the amount of gold you carry as a player or players.

Say if you get 3 players that are rather poor, then the gold drop rate is normal since most of the gold is out in the "world"..

If you get another game with 3 players all with like 1 million coins on them, then the amounts dropped from kills will be significantly smaller since the players already have accumulated a lot of the gold in the world.

Also if you are rich, perhaps the merchants in town wont be having much gold either, since the player has it, so when selling items to the NPCs you get a lower return than you would normally.

This is of course just teh basic idea.. Some sort of system would need to be made inorder to prevent "gold runs" where one rich player joins a game with 5 super poor players just so he can get more gold than he would normally.

But that's just my basic idea, that to have gold from monsters depend on gold on players.

And perhaps adding a cap so you wont go below 30% of original value nomatter how rich you are.

So where you'd get 100g normally you would only et 30g now. This would of course be a floating percentage between 100% return and 30% return, depending on your wealth.

This would kinda sort the gold issue and make it much more valuable.

This idea would just cause gold muling, get rich dump all your cash on a mule repeat. All it would do is punish the people who don't know about the mechanic and the rest would just cheat the system.
