  • 0. Dear Blizzard...   10/02/2009 10:45:22 PM PDT
With the recent patch (1.2.4? I don't know..) a lot of maps are no longer playable. Now this may have seemed like a problem for Dota and icefrog at first, but he could fix it with a few or many tweaks i guess. Lucky.

The thing is, he is one of the few mapmakers still around editing their maps. Warcraft only went downhill through the last several years, and only those with a strong liking to the game have stayed all this time. Many of those people who were once good map makers are no longer with us due to life, boredom, and most commonly, WoW.

So because of this and the whole 'protection' on maps, we had only what they left us with. My favorite map is what led me back to warcraft so many times, what drove me to make my own clan, and go to forums and try to promote the map to others. it is now 4+ years old, but the quality was beyond its time. A full fledged RPG, "what a warcraft RPG should be."

The map is called Dark Lineage, it was very hard to get a hold of but somehow a version was distributed to the West, very poorly and minimilly translated. Because of that, some quests could not be figured out and progression was hard. Soon they translated it much better, and could be understood throughout the whole game.

So here we were playing this heavily outdated version of a Korean RPG. Why? Because that is what we were given and left with, and it sure as hell was fun enough. This past year (before patch) i have played SO much and still have not gotten enough out of the map as i wanted to. I have put many hours in, sometimes 8 hour grind sessions (with some buddies, hehe :)) ). It was a game you could really treat as a game of its own, i really liked that. Nothing came from 1 game alone, hard work was inevitable to progress, which is much different than the average 1 game power leveled RPGs we have in warcraft.

My whole clan right now is growing much more inactive (much). We were already a struggling RPG clan in a dota age. I named it RPGs but really, our primary focus was Dark Lineage and other quality maps for a break. Before we had above 20 active members. Now, we barely have 5, including myself.

For those who are interested in this map, you can check out http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/maps-564/darklineage-owen-v0-08-a-81679/ (real site is somewhere in korean, if someone speaks the language i more than welcome you to search their website and find the latest version). The map is full of weapon and armor atatchments, custom spells and logos, an array of unique bosses and models (insanely well done models, those dragons.... YICKS), and just a fun game you could but countless hours into.

So blizzard, i am glad your patch made map making a little less difficult or buggy, whatever it did. But realize that you have killed a huge part of Warcraft history, and all the maps that old map makers have made will never be able to return. Couldn't there be something like a checkbox to use the new/old editor only for future maps and map updates? That way, we can save the maps that went through the more tedious process of triggering and what not, and make it easier for future builders. I only wish there was some way

-Ken

Just lending my 2Bits in support of this idea. I am pretty new to this, but it seems a good Idea to allow players the option.

Blessings, BB.

I am an avid fan of Dark Lineage Owen as well, and when I was told Blizzard ended up killing(lol) one of my favorite maps I was pretty upset. (as far as being upset over a game goes).

I really do hope someone can crack this map and fix it.

From a competitive point of view, this may be one of the most difficult maps to crack, so hopefully this will convince some of you mapmakers out there to give it a shot as a test of your abilities.

If not, all I can say is thank you blizzard for destroying a part of Warcraft history not only with DLO, but with all the other maps that were affected by your patch. It's no small wonder why you're badmouthed as you are. Bravo.

ah thanks black, glad you read the post. And akira hello and thanks for joining the clan :). Although it is sad how many RPGs we are limited to. I am still hoping for someone to fix, or at least try fixing the map. It should be within reach of the general warcraft 3 map maker, or project maker at least ;). But hey, even if you have no skills in that area, more comments don't hurt. Blizzard will be a joke if the whole forum fills with these complaints, it's just a matter of ti---
oh wait....

Please!!!

Edit: i realize this would not be the right forum for fix requests, a map-making site would give much better luck. But feel free to respond to the original post, as i am still shocked that they fixed their precious campaign when they could have fixed their entire game

I also VERY much loved this game, and I believe I posted somewhere else about this map and the problem in general. I asked one of the shamans of Clan Blue, a mapmaking clan, to take a crack at it, but so far no luck. What I think may work is using a version-switcher to go back before the patch that broke DLO, and use something besides Battle.net to host so that you don't re-download the patch.. Beyond that I have no idea. All I know is I miss this game.
