Hello! Are you absolutely positive you want a Intel? I could be wrong, but last i heard the very best processor at the moment was AMD Phenom, with 4 cores. Again, I could be wrong, hopefully someone can help you further.

LOL at your amd systems crashing.... i've had nothing but amd systems for the last 12 years, never had a problem with crashing that was amd's fault.

and, the core i5 is worse than the i7, it's just newer, thats all.... why would they name it 5 if it was better.... look at the specs of the cpu's....

amd is cheaper than most intel chips.... and the new 45nm amd chips are way better then the origional phenom chips.... phenom's are usually faster than intel chips dollar for dollar...

if you have money, get i7..... i dunno dude....

why do so many people ask this question......?

I'm almost positive you're a troll, Snake, but in case you aren't:

1. This forum is not the place to be asking questions about PCs.
2. Just because you're a gamer does not mean you know anything about PCs.
3. Diablo 2 is an old game. Any CPU that has been released in the past 5 years is good enough to play D2 ten times over.
4. Asking people who do know about PCs what CPU is better is delving into a LONG and DEEP war between AMD and Intel. AMD fans like AMD. Intel fans like Intel. If you're asking a question about Intel, you're going to get AMD fans on your ass and vice versa.
5. Any crashing is unlikely due to the processor you buy.
6. Always read the reviews on sites like www.newegg.com before you buy any computer parts.

i7 is the better of the two from what i have read.

The argument over AMD or Intel...it depends on what you really want to do, and what you are willing to do to do it. AMDs can be pushed a lot harder than an Intels. AMD had Intel over a barrel for several years by getting better bus speeds and whatnot. Lately, Intel has put AMD on the spot...but when AMD releases there new stuff...it will be fun. AMD is no longer cheaper than Intel...for a comparable (stock) comp, Intel was cheaper when I bought my last comp in February.

I still like my old AMD machine...I often kept it running for over a month, with no restarts. This new Intel lasts for about 1-2 weeks before it starts eating itself.

if you want to buy your son's love:

intel core i7 920
6 gb ddr3 ram
radeon 4870

if you want to buy more love then just increase ram amount and buy better video card

Here are some typical causes of system crashes and what you can do to troubleshoot them.

Driver/hardware issues: Try to load in safe mode (tap F8 while booting up, select safe mode), disable your primary hardware instances. (audio/video/LAN/modem) Boot back into normal boot up mode and update the drivers. If you're having instant crash problems upon entering Windows normally, disable them in safe mode, enable one by one and see when it crashes. This will pinpoint which piece of hardware is causing the fault. A driver update may correct the issue, or the hardware might just be faulty and need replaced.
Another thing to try is reseating your cards. Just pull the card out and put it back in the slot.
You may also have hard drive issues, most commonly they are magnetic errors and can be repaired. If you hear any clicking noises coming from your disk drive, it is 99% of the time caused by a head crash.

RAM issues: Your ram may be faulty. Get a bootable CD with Memtest 86 on it. Boot from it and let it drill your ram for at least 5 passes. If you have multiple sticks and get errors, then test each one individually to figure out which one it is. Reseating your ram might also fix any ram related issues.

Heat issues: Any system that has been bought in the past 5 years generally has thermal shutdown technology built into the system. If it detects critical system components are getting too hot (CPU, chipset, etc), it will shut your system down immediately.
Be sure there is no lint/dust buildup in the CPU Heat sink/power supply. If you are overclocking, be sure that your heatsink can dissipate the heat efficiently.(the heatsink itself should not get so hot that you can't touch it, or anything over 135 degrees F)
Make sure that your fans are spinning properly.(they should not make much noise other than general fan whir)
Also take a good look at your motherboard capacitors. If they are pooched up on the top (they usually have a + or a k on them) then they are going bad. If they have a crusty white film on top of them or are blown open completely, you will have to either replace the capacitors, or get a new motherboard.

Malicious software and/or Viruses: Some forms of malware and viruses can cause system instability. They can alter/remove important system files resulting in various symptoms which some could resemble crashes.

I like to use these pieces of software to keep my systems bug free.

Avira Rescue CD - use this bootable antivirus/antimalware CD if malwarebytes/avg is unable to run, select "try to repair" and "rename files if can't be repaired" in the menu.
Malwarebytes Anti Malware - IMO the best anti malware utility out there.
AVG Free Edition - Free basic antivirus protection.
Hard drive Regenerator - Great utility for fixing magnetic errors on hard drives, but you have to pay for it. :(
Memtest 86 - great utility for checking ram stability

Vary rarely do you have to do a complete reinstall, but if you do, don't forget to back up your files!

As a last note, If you don't know what you're doing, don't try to fix it. You may make things worse! Take it to a certified computer repair shop, they will be more than happy to help you solve your computer problems. :)

If you really love your son, instead of a PC get him a memebership to a gym or something. So he won't become fat and sex deprived like the rest of us.

Yes intel is your best bet.. some "cheap skates" will say AMD.. Alien ware uses I7 chips and so do I.
You need a proper power supply , matching Motherboard , and pair it with efficent ram in order to reap the full potential.. If you want to make it simple... Look at the stats on a alienware pc. Theie is a custom pc builder on craigs list with a 99% rating and he has sold about 250 built gaming pc's.. The stats are about that of the alienware and cost about 2800.00 - 3400.00 ... If you want to get him a gaming pc.. I hate to tell ya but thats what its going to cost to get a good one that will last.. sure you can buy a 1500.00 pc that will work ok.. But it wont take long for the power supply to go , vidcard wont keep up with most pc games on full setting.. ( crysis needs a pimp of a pc to run on full settings) .. I built my pc.. cost me 2800.00 . the closest thing to it is the top of the line alienware pc for 5000.00 ... and my vidcard is better and i have a 1k powersupply that helps support a water cooled board.. good luck

More is better.. Ask any woman.. ahemm.. Anyways.. 1gid vid is like the norm now. stream movies ,vids , games.. whatever .. why in the world you you ever go with the minium... Unless you just strive for the minimum in life as well... Sack up man. get a i7 965 extream chip , ATI 4870 x2 vid card.. ( Thats 2 gigs of vid-ram) , get 3 2gig tripple channel corsiar ram sticks , get a intel DX58SO Extream board (its needed for the vidcard . ram , and chip ) ,1000 watt power supply ( i use a corsair with 140mm fan) , then get you a seagate 7200.11 1terabyte hdd with 32mb buffer, install in a cool master case. , cool the guts with a added D-TEC fuzion v2 waterblock and a primochill typhoon III reservoir system. You will need a swiftech MCP655 12v water pump and a radiator of your choice with tubing of course. I have a mechatronics 120x120x38mm high speed AC fan that runs off a wall plug . Tapped into the case.. Thats a very expensive comp and you need to keep it cool. The bluray ,dvd,cd,sdcard reader and all that is really up to you. ooh one more thing.. cables.. good cables make it all work efficiently ... This all const me about 2800.00 .. These people will deal with you when you purchase these types of things and buy it all at one time. My comp is 1500-2000 cheaper than the top of the line alienware pc , and I @#%% it.
