As the title suggests the problem I am having is specifically with StarCraft, my other games, Diablo 2 LoD, and Warcraft 3: TFT have experienced no issues at all.
Anyway, yesterday I was looking around for my StarCraft disc-set because some of my guildies in WoW started playing StarCraft for the first time, trying to peak interest in the story for StarCraft 2. I found my original Starcraft disc, but my Brood War disc could not be found. I went online onto my Battle.net account to digitally download the game. I waited a while for the game to download and once it finished I continued to install it. Before installation I was asked for a key and used the one given on the Battle.net account website, beside "Game Key:". I entered the specific CD-Key and continued to install. I completed the installation and continued to go onto battle.net to update my game so I could play with my friends.
During the update I encountered the following error:
The program was unable to create a file.
File Name: C:\Program Files\Starcraft\storm.dll
Error: Access is denied.

This patch upgrades Brood War from version 1.04 to version 1.16.1.
ERROR: unable to get write permission on file 'C:\Program Files\StarCraft\storm.dll'
Access is denied.
RESULT: Patch failed
I tried a few times and said the heck with it I'll try to patch manually, hoping to not encounter this problem again.
This was the error I received while manually patching the game:
The patch could not be applied because it does not match the file checksum. This problem can usually be corrected by uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

Before you even say anything about reinstalling the game and trying again I have already attempted 3-4 times to reinstall the game and apply the patch both through battle.net and manually all 3-4 times. So if you got any idea what the problem is or how to fix it, please give me some insight. I have recently uninstalled the game completely and only have the folder from the digital download, also the manual patch download which are both sitting on my desktop, so I will be waiting to reinstalling on your word.

Are you on windows Vista? If so you might have gotten by this issue by right clicking on executable and choosing run as administrator.
since the game is currently uninstalled you may want to try making a new folder and installing it there instead of in program files (Vista adds protection to this folder that can interfere with updates).
Thank you very much, this was successful in solving the problem, I successfully downloaded and updated the patch without having to use the manual patch. Thank you for the very quick and helpful response.
However if you could answer one more question it would be very much appreciated. I have one curiousity in particular, when I start up StarCraft using the shortcut on the desktop it works perfectly fine and I am able to log onto battle.net and do anything. However, when I place that icon onto the quick launch bar, on the toolbar, an error appears when I attempt to log onto battle.net saying:
"Battle.net was unable to properly identify your application version. Please uninstall and then reinstall the application. If the problem persists then you may have a computer virus. For information on detecting and removing this virus you may contact us by email at support@blizzard.com."
When I removed the shortcut from the quick launch bar, on the tool bar, and placed it back on the desktop it went back to working perfectly fine. It's no big deal I simply like keeping my desktop clean if I can, just something I found interesting, and thought you may findi t interesting as well.
Thank you again for the response.
Edit - Yes, I do use Vista. =p
