The sound effect when picking up a health or mana orb is way too fake and does not fit well with the game at all. In fact, the look of the orb doesn't match either.

Maybe it would be better to have the corpse of the monster glow red or blue instead, and when you click on them, their soul goes into you and replenishes the health or mana.

Isn't the sound the same one from Diablo 2 potion usage? I think the orbs are fine and shouldn't have more time invested onto reworking them.

but they don't make any sense!

if i was killing demons and out plops a red orb... i'd be like "wtf is that??". the idea is great for enemies to drop instant health/mana, but it just looks and sounds way too out of place with a demonic game.

It just seems like something you'd see in a castlevania game where hearts fly out and float toward the ground after killing something. it takes away from the spooky environment!

I don't believe any videos exist that show the health globes or play the sound they make when you pick them up as they exist now. The globes have a more gothicy-type look to them, sort of like a censer in a way? But with a big glowing red ball in the middle. And the sound they make when you pick them up is a more resonant "ka-thoonk".

When there's a lot going on around your character it could be easy to lose sight of a health globe, so keeping them very visible is important. Also you want to know when you're being healed so a prominent sound is very necessary. Most of the time there's so much carnage going on, a monster could drop a globe on top of you and you wouldn't even know you had picked it up if it weren't for the sound. It all works really well, you'll have to trust me.

(Also yeah, I think the old sound was pretty much a stealgrab of the potion sound in Diablo II)

Yes, but you have to remind yourself about how it has been done in the past/how everyone else does it. In Diablo 2, demons would drop a small glass vial with some red or blue liquid that you would actually drink and suddenly heal yourself or get more energy. How did the vials not break during all that? No clue.

I'm very glad to hear the globes are still being worked on Bashiok :)
And yeah, I can see how they can be overlooked with all the carnage going on.

you aren"t making the game, how would you know what fits or not? STFU WITH "it doesn't fit well with the game." and use braincells to think up of something better to QQ.

These forums were put here for discussion.

If you don't like the fact that your opinion is being argued against, then maybe you should come back when you reach maturity.

If X amount of people say it looks too cartoony, then the game IS cartoony for X amount of people.

I feel that saying that something doesn't fit well into a game without any real reason as to WHY, other than that it looks cartoony and doesn't wit well, is a very poor attempt to create any real discussion.

Try again that actually encourages discussion and isn't just you QQing about stupid this. Or else you get to read my rage threads.

the globes don't fit in D3 the same way that a comic relief character doesn't fit in a serious movie.

The game has blood, guys, evil everywhere you look... but then there are also these globes that come from the corpses of pure evil beings that look like they could very well have come from the 'hello kitty' dimension, or a super mario game.

How can you not understand this?

Have you ever seen the movie Event Horizon? If so, how would you feel if they put Jim Carey Pet Detective as one of the main characters? It would ruin the movie for MANY people.

I'm not saying these globes ruin the game though, I'm saying they don't match the gothic, epic feel of the rest of the environment.

AND, Bashiok mentioned that they already made the globes more gothic, and the sounds more realistic... so obviously blizzard thought the same thing. Proof that we are not all crazy, and that when we say something looks cartoony, maybe it DOES?

The globes he describes are in the wizard preview game play trailers.

Can download them here since there's no official downloads on the D3 page.

There's also a couple manna ones she picks up too.

How does that prove Blizzard thought the same thing? If they thought the same thing they would have changed them before the gameplay video came out. That point is stupid so I'll just ignore it.

Blizzard changed it because people were complaining and they agreed with that, but most people weren't concerned how the globes looked, they cared that the globes were even there.

The OP even stated that himself, so no, they don't think what you're thinking, they realise people don't want it and some people do, so they made a compromise, is that so hard to understand?

i cant name the video i heard it in but the only sound ive ever associated with the orbs was the "ka-thoonk" sound he described. maybe some other sound randomly lined up with grabbing a orb but its more likely that at least one video out has the new sound. from the start of the thread i was trying to figure out why it was a "cartoony" sound. i probably ignored the old d2 like sound because its part of the noise im listing for for things like rings charms gems jewels and amulets thru in d2.

You have precisely zero definitive evidence for this. There's every possibility that the original look of them in the videos released so far were simply place holders for works in progress. In fact, the fact that Bashiok mentioned that he thinks the sound effect was a soundgrab from D2 gives a pretty strong indication that they weren't going to be the "final product".

Personally, picking up a health orb doesn't break any kind of immersion into the gothic-y world of Sanctuary. Mainly because there's only so much story I can be involved with before I step back and realize I'm sitting at my computer playing a video game. If I want to be that involved in something, it's probably not going to be how dark and engaging a video game is, but more with how much fun I can have with it.

Yes I do actually, the OP said he didn't want orbs, he SPECIFACLLY said what he wanted instead of orbs, I can safely assume therefore he doesn't want normal orbs? So yeah, Blizzard didn't agree with you, if nobody had complained about the orbs in general they probably wouldn't have been changed. If it's not broken, why fix it?

They make a lot of sense. Actually more sense than the diablo 2 potions. I hope the health orb mechanic works well in game. I love the looks of it, reminds me of Devil May Cry and fits perfectly into a fast paced hack 'n slay. Diablo is fast paced and enjoyable more than it is dark, realistic and gothic, so, no, it's not a problem.
