I made a post earlier and it contained this, people seemed to like the idea, so I figured I'd give its on thread.

The enchanted weapons are just a joke. Don't get me wrong I think that they should leave the flame, lightning and cold weapon animations. There just needs to be variety of effects for different levels of damage that a weapon does.

cold damage - 1-10 weapon glows blue, 11-25 weapon leaves a blue trail, 25-50 weapon leaves frost trail, 51+ weapon has constant frost + trail (what we saw in gameplay demo) and similar for all enchanted items. Its a little ridiculous when an maul does 1-5 fire damage is on fire....just looks too over the top. The effects should be more varied plus it would add some identification for multiplayer and for just add more depth to the game...not to mention give you something to strive for weapon wise.

Not a bad idea, but maybe you/they could include more than just visual differences. I would like to see the effects of different levels of (elemental) dmg cause different effects on monsters.

Only problem I see with it is: I have had some really good rares in d2 with stupid mods like (1-3 fire dmg) on them.

I completely agree. There has to be a different degree of "fire" lets say at the end of the maul. Just adds to the effect that there is more or less fire damage.

With the higher detail of D3, I think everyone's going to want their characters to look cool, I know I am.
I'm all for any spiffy effects on the character itself.

There is no Good without Evil,
nor Order without Chaos.

Very good idea, to the original poster.

And Deist, are you thinking something along the lines of this:

A maul with 1-5 dmg will be slightly glowing red and hurt just 1 monster. Add 10-15 damage, the maul has puffs of embers emitted with each strike, and there is a chance for a 4 yard radius damage from the embers. Add 20-30 damage and the maul is lit up, every strike does immediate fire damage to at least a 1 yard radius, with a % chance for a 4 yard ground fire (similar to Immolation arrow).

And if that's not what you meant, what do you think?

:-D

Looks cool to me. It would certainly make elemental items more interesting. Both visually and in function.

I fully endorse that idea.
Always thought that the blazing maul (107-167 + 25-27 fire damage, by the way) the barbarian is carrying in the gameplay trailer is a bit too over the top. Looks like he's wielding a big ass torch, not a maul.

That's actually exactly what we have. The elemental effects seen in the video were, at the time, the most "powerful" versions of each effect to make sure they were noticeable. And of course, they were certainly not final.

He does that alot. Also, it's not like he revealed what the last two classes were, this is pretty minor stuff.

So if you have low fire damage and low cold damage of equal level, would you want it to glow purple or....?

Bashiok = Tyrael.

Helping the forum dwellers when the Dev team says, "No, leave the pitiful humans to their guesswork about our game!"

Sorry....my brain struck a connection between the two scenarios :-)

It's still some food! I guess if we asked for minor details he's willing to feed us. I'm actually quite happy with this new info. I'm happy to see that the effects (probably not only on items) will increased based on
char/item/mod levels. Further I do hope they find a good way to balance visual effects, from what I have seen so far there where moments that seemed a bit too much over the top.

Keep up the good work D3 team!

Yeah, what happens if your weapon has more than on element on it? Are weapons going to have multiple elemental damage effects? And what about armor? Will they glow if they have elemental damage effects on them (I hope not)?

mmm green gas secreting from head to toe. Its prob only weapons animations though? I don't like the thought of elemental damage on armor...

Got a new computer! Most anticipated game now Diablo 3!

They'll likely just alternate every few seconds on the displayed graphical effect, although the official details would be cool

Great! I wonder how far they have gone with this sort of cool idea? For example do you get different effects when you mix damage types? For example will there be a new effect/look if I socket fire and electric, versus fire and poison? :)
