Wonder how they will have key drops in D3 ... in D2 they had keys drop seemingly at random and they fit any chest any where ... wouldn't it be cool if certain chests in the game had to be opened by only a certain key ... so in order to open that particular chest you would have to kill a certain bossling type creature and then and only then you could open that chest .. I am not saying all chests will be like this but maybe only a few chests which have better loot than the others ... and the chest would most likely be pretty close to the guy who dropped the key, but not necessarily in the same room. Wonder if they could do that with doors too ... although it appeared in the demo that doors will be fairly easy to bash open as our Barbarian friend demonstrated for us.

I wouldn't mind the special key for a special treasure chest thing. I'd want the key guardian close to the treasure though. To prevent griefers from stealing keys though, you'd probably have to have such keys shared with your party.

Mundane locked containers...? No thank you.

Locked level exits requiring a key? Sure... that would help cut down on the use of teleport to skip levels.

Oh, and there was door bashing in D2 (act 5 outside...).

Sounds cool, as long as there aren't too many of them. I'd hate to have my inventory filled with random keys.

I don't like this idea (keys and doors), because it stops the flow of the game and imagine playing diablo III for the 10th time and you have to get the key, and you know you have to walk through the whooooole lvl to get it, it kinda suuuucks (like getting the amulet, than the staff, it took forever, and in normal (d2) it was sooo boring, and doing it in nightmare again (omg), the only real challenge came in hell, because of immunities!)

Keys and chests, why not, but why the keys? How about, kill this monster, that door opens or something like that

Finally a decent idea around here. Just no going overboard please, keys pissed me off immensely in D2, so useless.

Having keys that are dropped for specific uses, that have more story and questing elements tied to them are definitely possible. In a general 'designery' way Leoric's crown was essentially a key used to unlock the boss fight in the BlizzCon demo. So I don't think it's out of the question to then have a literal key be used for more quest-centric chest unlocking purposes.

That's of course completely separate from the generic dropped keys and their ability to open randomly spawned 'locked' chests. We don't currently have keys and locked chests, but... we're not completely opposed to them either.

Something I posted about a long time ago, which were just ideas being thrown around internally, is the idea of having multiple tiers of chests with subsequently lower spawn rates, and subsequently increased chances for dropping better and better items. At that point keys sort of become this unnecessary burden, because you already had the amazing luck of having the rarest chest type in the game spawn, it's probably not all that cool to then also say "Now find a key for it!"

Get a good reason to not like it.

Special keys for special chests would be cool, but the key should go away when you leave the game, but it should be really rare, lol.

i dont like it either.

imagine, you're playing with your friend, and then a uber-chest spawns.. both of you stay like "oooh cool, but we dont have a key".. so you and your friend just continue the game.. after two hours, a uber-key drops, and someone gotta go backtracking all the way to the chest, while the other stays doing nothing.. thats time-wasting and boring 4 me..

I like the idea.

you got me thinking. It would be cool if bosses dropped keys for larger more epic chance chests, but these chests are scattered in the exploring areas, in this way it might stop the farming of only bosses, and ask players to go into the explored areas more, rather than just farm bosses.

I know alot of people might not like Too Human, but idea I liked in that game was, when you finish sections of a chapter, you get a key or relic, if you have all relics for that chapter and fight the boss, the chances off better lott are increased. I thought it was a good idea, even though it doesnt seem to work well, but the thought was there.

i like the idea of having locked chests , but imo problem with them is if they're too common, like they were in d2 ,then they just become nuisance ,and i didn't like the idea of wasting inventory space on useless keys so i just ignored them.
Tho it would be cool if there are only some kind of rare chests in d3 , unlocked with also rare keys . This could also make keys valuable trade items .
Still i don't think it's very simple to distract boss farming with chests .
Because if they are random and rare boss farming would still be more stable and rewarding , and if they aren't ,then they aren't as much as different as bosses , only more boring .
But then again it will sure bring some more diversity if you're like , after a week farming with cca 10 keys then u have an option to go some chest hunting .

Seems kind of silly. You're creating chests that you can only open if you kill some monster for a key. So why not just have the monster's death remove the magical ward on the chest so you don't have to carry a blasted key (Countess, Tower Celler Level 5, Black Marsh, Act 1, Diablo 2)? Or, to simplify it even more, why not just have the monster drop whatever loot you'd get from the chest? Although realistically it's not like Diablo keeps unique short battle bows in his pockets.

Yeah I hate keys.

I don't know about that...
- If you come across an uber chest, and it's locked you could get that "Ooooh! Where's the key!!!" kind of excitement, encouraging you to explore the area more thoroughly looking for the mob with the key.
-If only the best chests were locked, and you came across a key, then you'd have the "Ooooh! Where's the uber chest!!!" kind of excitement...
-You could also gather your friends / party around when you opened such a locked chest to maximize the drops (a key would prevent it from being opened when unaware of the drop potential).

It wouldn't be cool if the key was a long way from the chest (at the very least it must be on the same dungeon level), but if close it could certainly add something (in theory... should be verified with play-testing).

Yeah, it would be pretty cool to actually have chests that drop some fine loot instead of the crap ones in D2.

Well, if it's a specific key, from a specific critter, for a specific chest...
Why not just have their treasure table be larger? It's really the same thing unless there's a large separation between chest and critter (at which point it'll be like doing a fetch quest, JOY!!!)

Personally I really see no point to chests with keys outside a quest setup, there's not really much point except adding another thing to clutter your inventory.

There is no Good without Evil,
nor Order without Chaos.

One thing i never understood is,
If I'm carrying a huge sword, or something of that nature... Why do i need a key to open a wooden chest?

IMO it would be nice if we could have key rings. So we dont have to waste inventory space to carry them around.
