Will there be more ways to customize your items than in previous games, or(this might be a bad question)will the players be able to customize items at all in D3?

If so, in which ways?

Q u o t e:
As for now :
Runes and gems...

1) I dont think that items are confirmed to be able to be socketed (tho it is likely).
2) Runes can no longer be placed in items at all, they are used to modify skills.

well it might be possible they have other kinds of runes, or gems or something like that, so far no one knows, but i hope you can customize items, in one way or another

I believe we will be able to enchant items, as you can see enchanted items on the gameplay video, maybe they will be enchantable on an NPC or something like that... But I might be wrong, and the items may just come enchanted from the factory ;D...

I sincerely hope that they don't include runewords in this game, for me, runewords were the worst invention on Diablo 2, they unbalanced the game in a way noone could imagine D2 could be messed up...

And I think gem socketing will be back on D3

Hmm, well why not allow items to be developed by the means of level, that items can get experiance and be developed with skills, and the higher levels the item gets the more powerfull skills and powers can be unlocked, allowing you to make your items more powerfull than they were when buyed/dropped, maybe that could add something new to the Diablo game series.

That is in fact a cool idea, and reminds me of the new type of item Blizzard implemented on WoW WOTLK...
The "Bound to account" item... this type of item is buyable with badges by any character you have in your account, and can be used by any of them, from level 1 to level 80, the items can be enchanted with non-level restricted enchants and they develop certain abilities, increase stats, depending on the level of the character wearing it...

Would be nice to have items similar to the "bind to account" ones... =P

I like the idea of items getting better as you level but using an item from 1-80 is a little too much, why would u even need to look for a good weapon when u can just use the one you start with the whole game. It would be cool however to make an item that is really good, better.

I know, I wasn't saying they should make that kind of item, i'm just saying that his idea is similar to that new WoW item kind =)...

Example:
Maybe they can make an item that will progress strongly from level 20-25 and on 25 it'll stop getting stronger, but on 25 it would still be stronger than i dont know... level 28-29-30 items... something like that...

Not up to me to decide that anyway, just a crazy idea that I just had...

from the things they have released items are already enhanced with special abilities from what i have seen there will not be any sockets for even gems

It is better to sit and appear to be stupid, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Thus far we've shown that items do have sockets, and gems can be placed in them. We're not continuing runewords, and the term 'rune' is now associated with the rune/skill system. What other options may be available, we're not telling. :)

We haven't released any information on our site, but it was possible to collect socketed items as well as gems in the BlizzCon demo, so any news site or fan site that attended MAY have included that as information. I don't remember any specifically reporting on it off the top of my head.

The gem stats at this point are more or less just the basics yanked from Diablo II to get the system running and have something to play around with.

Oh please, PLEASE. We're running dry on information here...

once the game is released, there will be SO much content we cannot handle it at once, so why not throw us some meat now :(

I'm sure they'll throw us some meat, but not just now hehe, they'll wait till we're almost starved to death, then they'll do it, hahaha =P

We could manage knowing almost NOTHING about Blizzard games in development before WoW, I think we could use some of that strength now too =D

honestly, i kinda like it this way...not much info, and most things that we know might change...kinda sadistic, but fun and interesting... the only thing that makes it bad is the lack of blue posts...i mean i get it, the game is a loing way from being finished, but still, it sucks a bit,...

i personally would be thrilled just with a steady suply pf blue posts saying like what part of the game is looked at, what ideas are thrown around the office at blizz, %%## like that...thus we don't get detailed, precise and definite bits of information, but we do know that people are working and the overall the game is coming along...who knows, maybe some of us following these forums might come up with some cool ideas....

I am willing to bet that they offer some sort of customization akin to what they are doing with Runes/Skills.

Enchants might be a good way to accomplish this. I'm not talking about your normal fire/ice enchants either. You could do a multi-strike enchant, or maybe a piercing enchant for ranged weapons. These enchants will not necessarily be permanent and you will likely be able to swap them in and out as you see fit. This might even be a good money sink.

The idea would be to add small customizations to weapons that make your character slightly different than other ones ... similar to what runes do to skills.

This is the kind of stuff that keeps me stimulated and looking forward to Diablo III even more!

This is also the kind of stuff that the manual-stat doomsdayers should pay attention to.

What I love about Diablo III:
+ Taking the game in a new direction
+ Random adventures as a primary form of exp-gain.
What I hate about Diablo III:
- Possibility of no LAN play!

Are you adding the improvements made to the gem system in WoW to D3'a iteration of it, such as meta gem slots and socket bonuses? I felt those features added some much needed depth to item socketing.

Although I wonder why WoW's devs decided to remove the item-type specific socketing, like for example putting a Chipped Emerald into a sword gave it poision damage, but putting the same kind of gem into a helmet or armor gave it a bonues to Dexterity.
