  • 0. Identify.... just remove it?   02/12/2009 03:27:38 PM PST
I know I'm creating my own version of this topic.. many topics out there.

Instead of all the ideas to enhance identify, why not just remove it?

You pick something up
You identify it
You usually end up dropping it

Identifying is a mandatory function. A bottleneck hinderance to the game play. One of the reasons for having to revisit a town over and over. You lose the immersion in the game by doing this chore.

I finally discovered something about Tyrael ..... he is blonde...

I agree just get rid of it. I mean you have to purchase ID scrolls in hopes that you find something even worth identifying or you bug Decard Cain and hope to god you don't accidentally click on him to explain something to you. It was more annoying than interesting.

I agree to remove identifying, not that I am lazy, but I don't see any good exercise on identifying items.

You can run, but you will only die without stamina.

Unless the identifying system changes, I don't want it back.
The atual one only forces you to carry scrolls/tome if you want to see the propeties of the itens that just droped from the mobs, or carry the itens and return to town so that Cain identifies then. There's nothing good in this system.

I heard of trades of unidentified items, but I dont make these trades, so a cannot discuss about it.

The identify system has gone through quite a few internal iterations already, and I think we'll probably see quite a few more. It's an interesting system in a lot of ways because first off it's something everyone remembers from the previous games, so if it wasn't there you'd probably wonder where it went. In a different light you could literally remove it entirely and probably not impact gameplay itself very much at all. It's also open ended enough where you could blow the system out and do something new and cool with it. Ultimately (and I know it's a broken record at this point) we'll do what is best for the game and what adds to the best game experience possible.

Personally - my own personal thoughts on the system - are that I think you could do almost anything with it and I'd be just fine. It wasn't annoying to me when playing the previous games, it was just a part of how they played, if it was removed I don't think I'd really miss it either, and if it was changed for the better then that's cool too.

So I hope this new system will add something to the game.

Identifying have make Cain so rich at Diablo1 that he doesnt need more to charge for identify on Diablo2.

Personally I liked the Diablo I Identify system, where you could use unidentified items, but got no bonuses (or penalties!) from them.
It was fun for the first few levels, to wonder if I should just use this good axe, or if I should ID it and it might get better or worse.

Then there's all the trading things with "unidentified" items

There is no Good without Evil,
nor Order without Chaos.

Well i played both Classic and Xpac and my personal opinion is that i love id'ing items. This is because on classic you look for good rare items, when i picked up a rare item in Classic you can see the color of the item and it gets you excited to ID it. Its really fun and it never got old for me, and ive been around for a long time. People that played only xpac dont understand.

His bones are gold plated platinum.

Speaking of precious metals, this just crossed my mind:

Thorium in WoW is actually a real metal. The catch?

It's highly radioactive and I believe it's a used to make components in nuclear fuel rods.

Everytime you equip a piece of equipment made from thorium (or hell, just even handle the stuff) you're essentially exposing yourself to unhealthy amounts of radiation.

You don't even wanna know what happens to the people who equip codpieces made of Thorium.

All I can say is they won't be having kids anytime soon.

Might not be so tedius if scrolls did a mass identify. Identifies all items on you... perhaps items near you as well.

I'd rather have some id mechanic in game.
as someone earlier mentioned in the times of classic D2 dropped rare items surely made your heart beat faster and identifying it was tied with serious excitement.
expansion ruined it because only elite uniques were worth using. If you see golden hydra bow you know it's Windforce. Ultrarare items like WF also caused euphoric state but excitement in the last seconds before identification is not there.

to remove tediousness of picking, identifying ended with dropping you can allow to cast id on an area or to target items laying on ground with id spell/scroll. Players would pick only good items so a lot of time would be saved

Also i'd like to see uniqueness, epicness and 'setness' indicators on unidentified items removed. IMHO it would be cool to have only 3 degrees of item quality expressed in color of unidentified item. Normal stuff, common magic stuff and rare magic stuff. Rare would include uniques, artifacts, legendary items, set pieces and whatnot.
It would make ID more useful and force people to put some effort in farming. In d2 it's like: create, go to boss, smack him, pick golden and green items, repeat. Gold color allowed people to skip id part entirely because they knew what this item is and anything else is not worth picking up.
As a bonus wizard, an educated magic user, could be able to see additional degree of quality, making distinction between let's say rares+sets and uniques+epics+legendaries.... Neat class ability, but nothing really groundbreaking.

i think there should be random points in "dungeon X" like an ID SHRINE of some sort, that you can use ONCE. the reason i say once is because when you get X far into the game youll have all these items to identify use this shrine to identify all unid items your carrying, after that single identification the shrine becomes null for the rest of the game giving you the sense to keep moving forward and not run back to identify any other items you find further on in the dungeon, small towns in the static OUTSIDE environment to identify with a cost.

this will keep you moving forward less "wash rinse repeat" actions and keeping economic value to the sort of ID they decide to implement. i think they shouldnt allow mass id scrolls or tome's to be BOUGHT i think it would work more like a thawing potion where u can only bjy X ammnts of scrolls from vendor A create a VERY long cooldown time to buy again( which will also keep you moving forward throught the game instead of sitting there waiting for more scrolls. allow 1 scroll to id x ammount of unid items.

The problem was in D2 it didn't add anything to the game either, it was just an annoying administrative step.

Unless identifying can be made to have some gameplay value, I also think it should be removed.
