  • 0. Can't host (different problem)   01/07/2009 05:37:28 PM PST
okay this is the thing...I know how to port forward i've done it before but I recently got a new modem from my ISP and its a SpeedTouch 780 now the problem is that a few months ago I was able to play StarCraft fine with this SpeedTouch, when I tried getting on this week, it won't work.

I can get on battle.net but heres where my problems start i'll separate them into different pieces.

Problem #1
Friend A) I can enter his maps, load his maps, and play his maps just fine (when its only me and him)
Friend B) Can't enter my maps, I can't enter his (and I used to be able to a few months ago)

Problem #2
If I enter a map my DL won't start, I've played starcraft for a long time I know it isn't instant if others are DLing but even after everyone DLs I won't even if I rj 100 times, the only thing that seems to fix the problem is having people leave (the fewer the people in the room the higher the chance my DL will start)

Problem #3
Even if I somehow DL the map and get into the game they will lag like crazy for everyone until I leave the map (the exception is when I play alone with me and Friend A)

I port forwarded my modem (which apparently doubles as a router -.-) via PortForward.com and I'm 100% sure I staticed IP'd and Forwarded it correctly but even after fowarding it and such it still won't work, its becoming really frustrating and for some reason I get the impression it isn't my computer seeing as it didn't do this till I DLed the new patch a few weeks ago (ask I said It worked fantastic a few months ago without any hardware changes or software changes)

The problems are all related, it's a port issue. If you don't have a separate router (just the router/modem combo), then make sure it has the latest firmware. Also, check if it supports Port Triggering. If so:

If it's disabled, try enabling that for 6112-6119 TCP/UDP.
If it's enabled, disable it.

From there, we'll do some tests to see if it's a background program causing the issue.

I tried port triggering and It didn't work trying to figure out where to get the firmware updates, my triggering for the starcraft forward didn't have a trigger set so I set it to 6112 also like you suggested and it made no difference at all

Update: I just hosted a map and the hosting works now (i put back everything to default port forwarding for starcraft no triggering) but i still can't DL anyones maps, i found the firmware but its some weird .bli file and I don't know how to install that :/

As for the firmware, there should be instructions on your manufacturer's website and in the instructions manual. It should be very simple; just download the firmware update, go into your router settings, look for something like "Administration" or "Update" and then it'll just ask you to browse for the file and it'll update automatically.

Anyway, how do you know it's you that needs to download the file? Also, are they big map files, with music, etc?

Cause i'll enter a map I never DLed before and it won't start dling, second it passes a few minutes and it won't kick in (and normally their stupid maps like defense games and such) and I'll be asked to rj, I rj once, twice, fourth, fifth and it won't start then suddenly 3 or 4 people leave and then it randomly starts DLing :/ and finishes in like 3 seconds.

Also the website for my modem doesn't seem to have any instructions -.-; just the firmware and the modems menu doesn't say anything about update I've been looking for a while now :/

Alright, hang on to that file for now, we'll figure that out in a little bit, ;). Can you try running in Selective Startup? This will stop other programs from running in the background. To run in Selective Startup, view the link below:
Windows:

Macs:

alrighty im in selective startup lemme try getting on starcraft now and see if it did any change

Update: No luck the problem is still there...so it isn't something running in the background lol...this is starting to feel like a lost cause ;_;, I did notice if its only me and 1 other person (host and me) I can DL (as aslong as its host and just me in the game I won't lag ingame either) but the second there is 2 or more people in the room (or in the game) I can't DL (and lag like crazy once that game starts)

Hrm, it's still a port issue. Please run me a tracert. To run a tracert, follow the steps below:
1) Go to Start > Run
2) Type in "command" or "cmd" depending on your OS.
3) Make sure the directory you are in is your desktop. You can change directories using the "cd" command.
4) Type in "tracert *realm.battle.net > hi.txt".
5) You let the tracert run, and there should be a new .txt file on your desktop. (30 is the last run)
6) Post the contents of "hi.txt" in a reply.

*: Change this with your realm. For example, useast.battle.net.

(If you use a Mac, please let me know and I will tell you how to specifically run it on a Mac)
