I've got the digital copy and a CD copy too and tried something like this a couple days ago. My CD copy is on one computer and the digital copy is on another. When I moved the Starcraft folder of the CD copy over to the computer with the digital copy, everything ran fine, BUT it didn't use the digital copy's CD key on Battle.net - It used the CD copy's CD key. I'm sure this probably isn't a problem for most people, but sometimes I play SC with my friends, so I need the second copy to be running on a different key.
Replacing the BrooDat.mpq digital-copy with my BrooDat.mpq CD-copy and then running the downloaded 1.16 patch worked perfectly like you said though :)

Q u o t e: Don't post your broodwar.mpq online and share it to other people.
I don't want to tip people off, so just trust me on this one. edit your post and take it off.
This isn't broodwar.mpq
It's BrooDat.mpq
If someone decides to be a douchebag and hack my BrooDat.mpq file for information (like what, a CD key?) then I guess I'll have to use a different key. I've got more than one SC Battle Chest laying around.
If BrooDat.mpq somehow managed to get hold of my personal finances or username/passwords for various websites (which I don't save on my computer), then I guess I'll be screwed. But if it did, then I believe my first visit will be to an attorney to figure out what business Blizzard products having farming that kind of information from my PC in the first place.

I have verified that the file contains nothing unique by matching it to my local version.
Q u o t e: some1 upload the mpq file to a more secure place because it might not last on megaupload forever. we may need come next time blizz makes a patch
So, because of that, I'm officially adding it to our (OTS volunteers) support tools:
http://maged.lordaeron.org/BrooDat.mpq
Q u o t e: I still get the "battle.net was unable to properly identify tour application version" error.
Yes! Thank you! Finally it worked. Just to put exact directions on what you need to do:
1. download the broodat.mpq file.
2. put that new file into your existing starcraft folder. Replace it. with the old one when asked.
2. download the latest broodwar patch manually. You should see no staredit.exe errors.
3. Broodwar should start automatically. go to battle.net and voila! it works!!!

Heavenlykid: It normally takes Support 2-3 business days to respond to e-mails, however they had some time off for Thanksgiving so they had a lot of catching up to do.

This worked for me. If you get that unable to verify version error you need to get the 1.16 standalone patch for Broodwar. I did that and it works fine.

The poster above was right on but there's an easier way without hosting the full BrooDat.MPQ file. Just use an MPQ editor to put StarEdit.exe from BrooDat.MPQ into your current one.
Download both files. Extract them. Run Ladik's MPQ editor, then open the SC folder, then BrooDat.MPQ. Hit OK. Drag the staredit.exe file from the ZIP from Filefrront into the MPQ editor and hit OK without making any rules. Close it and patch up.

Good idea, completely random citizen! ;)
I'll put together a patcher to automate this and host that instead. Thank God Ladik's MPQ editor accepts commandline...

You do not have to go this route anymore. We've released a new 1.15.3 patch that will add the missing file. Just install the game, connect to Battle.net and it'll download the new 1.15.3 patch. Once it applies, connect again and it'll get you the 1.16 patch.

Perhaps a temporary sticky letting everyone know of the new patch and that the issue has been resolved?
