I have just done a complete reinstall of my computer (Windows and all) to try and resolve this issue with no success....
I installed (full install) Diablo II LoD, when I try to log onto Battle.net it downloads the 1.12a update but then hangs at "Waiting for files to close: Diablo II.exe" ... eventually I get an error which tells me to close the game and retry. I have checked in Task Manager and DIablo ii.exe and game.exe are not loaded. I tried to do download the actual patch file myself and get virtually the same thing "Waiting for Game to close ..." and then the error about ensuring the game is not running.
This is driving me mad! I have now had this problem on 2 different Windows installs, on different hardware sets. System specs below:
AMD Athlon X2 3800+
1.5GB DDR-400 RAM
320GB WD SATA II HD
ATI Radeon X1650 PCIe
Dual 17" Acer LCD screens
Windows XP Pro SP3
all updates done, latest drivers installed, I have had this problem with and without my antivirus installed, but for FYI, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008

What happens if you restart the computer and then tried running the downloaded patch without touching the game? Also keep in mind if you use any custom software like docks or Windows shell replacements, those may do odd things with preloading game files and prevent the patch from happening.

You are indeed correct. It was a program I had running called "Aqua Dock" which apparently cashes the files in its list of runnable programs. After 1/2 hour on the phone with tech support we found that. The person I spoke to recommended Rocket Dock as it does not cash the files. He stated he runs that with no trouble. Thanks for your reply!
hmmm i'm having the exact same problem... i cant update my diablo 2 LOD.
n i tried reinstals n reboot but still doesnt work...
