I just installed Starcraft and Stacraft: Brood War a few days ago, and I'm having issues for which I can't find solutions.
First of all, most of the time when I start up the program, and all the time when I alt+tab out and back in, most of the gameplay becomes very color-distorted. I don't really know how to explain it other than to say it gets extremely bright on anywhere from a small amount of the screen to the entire screen, the colors turning neon-ish.
Second, I have no problem connecting to Battle.net, and no abnormal issues connecting to games; I do, however, seem to be unable to download maps 99% of the time, and any time I manage to download the map and stay in the game until it starts, I lag a fair amount, enough that I can't play with any effectivness. I've only tried UMS games thus far, but I've noticed that I can create games versus computers and not have lag.
I'm running 32-bit Vista with Windows Firewall, and have appropriately opened the ports both manually and giving exception capabilities to Starcraft. These issues do not change whether or not I run in compatability mode with XP SP2, nor with running as administrator.
