  • 0. GUI trigger crashes game in TFT mode, not RoC   03/13/2010 04:36:52 PM PST
Couldn't believe it when I found out that this little trigger was causing my game to crash, just didn't make sense.

Game - Enable/Disable Mission

It doesn't matter whether it's set to Enable or Disable, but if the mission selected is any of the following, the game will crash when the action runs.

Night Elf 01
Night Elf 02
Night Elf 03
Night Elf 04
Night Elf 05
Night Elf 06
Night Elf 06 Interlude
Night Elf 07

(I tested all of them just now, after downloading the latest patch, 1.24e I believe?)

If running in Frozen Throne mode when this trigger is run, the game crashes and gives the following fatal error message (on a PC)

Q u o t e:
...
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 001B:150348BC

The instruction at '0x150348BC referenced memory at '0x00000000'.
The memory could not be 'read'.

Weird thing is, none of the other missions cause the crash. Human 02 and Night Elf X05 are perfectly acceptable values, but the game doesn't like the original night elf missions for some reason. Running in Reign of Chaos mode, the trigger
Game - Enable/Disable Mission Night Elf 06
runs without a problem, which is why we haven't seen crash reports for every night elf mission in RoC.

But seriously, wtf? Seems like a pretty random and obscure bug with the game. Only way I can imagine it occurred is because Night Elf is the only race whose name is composed of two words, and somebody left out a space, or added one where there shouldn't have been when TFT was made.

Unfortunately I'm probably the only person ever who actually wanted to use that trigger, since I'm making a campaign based on Reign of Chaos, and I wanted the player to be able to play the original missions upon completing the appropriate missions in my campaign, if they hadn't already been unlocked. Tried converting the triggers to custom text, but the game still crashed.

Anyway, I wanted to throw it out there for the community to see, if only as a curiosity. Doubt Blizzard will fix it since the World Editor isn't officially supported, and the game is seven years old. I wouldn't even know how to report it, since as far as I can tell we haven't had any Blues in this forum for years. I'll try the tech support forum, just in case.
