  • 14. Re: Is Night elf the only Non-Cookie Race?   01/06/2010 01:40:53 AM PST

Q u o t e:
If you're asking if Nelf requires more micro then yes, at least at a low level of play. You can't mass Huntress or Dryads anymore because their armor type was nerfed to make them less invulnerable. As a result, you have to watch your units because their health drops quickly compared to something like Grunts and Raiders with Spirit Link.

But the reason for Nelf doesn't have a strategy that works against everything like DK and Fiends is because of the way the race itself works. Nelf no longer has any power units but instead counter units to every situation, and often those units aren't strong enough themselves so you have to combine them with others.

For example, for casters you may want Faerie Dragons for the aoe splash but also Dryads to dispel. Another example is the Chimaera that only can attack ground units and require support units like Hippogryphs as the Chimaera is not a counter to anything alone. For Undead this is nearly reverse, Crypt Fiends and Frost Wyrms are generally units with very few weaknesses and they have the answer to almost every situations. Undead generally do not need to make use of many situational units but a few.

If that isn’t what you like then Nelf isn’t a race for you. Nelf is a race where you have to scout a lot because you can’t play some preset cookie cutter strategy, but you can play a "cookie cutter counter strategy", like how DK Panda demolishes a Human army or DotT makes Orcs unit go fly.

This is all actually quite true. Elf is an easy race to learn and kill newbs with but once people get a few games under there belt this becomes the race that requires the greatest amount of knowledge and micro in the game. The Elf race is very popular in asia because of the high micro required to play the race. One thing can be said for sure, if a night elf beats you he more than deserved the win.
