Q u o t e: Why not get creative and design gear to make other mercs useful instead?
The gear that is useful for some other mercs (like Iron Wolves) are pretty much the same gear other casters use, so tweaks can't really be done there without making spellcaster stuff more powerful in general.
Act 5 mercs, again, making gear more powerful for them would make gear more powerful for all-purpose melee classes and whatnot.
The keyword here, instead of "making other mercenary classes more useful" is to figure out which gear pieces would be more beneficial to them and suit them up. If you're talking about adding auras to everything and then making all of those items accessible to regular characters as a result...that's not really making other mercenaries more useful because then you could just load up those pieces on Act 2 mercenaries and get an additional aura from them.
For example, if I made an all-purpose armor that would be a "cheap start" for undergeared mercenaries, they'd probably see a lot more use to people who actually played through the whole game instead of a mercenary.
