  • 0. Crippling Bots: An Easier Way?   09/29/2010 06:53:53 AM PDT
Credit for this idea goes to Dr.`distaster. It's too good an idea to get buried in the Season Poll thread. His post is here:

Most botting (automated play using a hack program) in Diablo II is enabled by exactly two runewords:
"Engima" armor - Gives any character the Teleport skill. Most bots are Blessed Hammer Paladins or Hurricane/Tornado druids with Enigma equipped, letting them blitz through levels.
"Infinity" polearm - Breaks elemental immunities with its Conviction Aura. Sorceress bots equip this or give it to their Act II Mercenary. They can then clear out the Chaos Sanctuary or Baal's Throneroom, no problem at all.

Removing both of these runewords from the Ladder would slow bots down significantly, if not remove them entirely. Yes, there could still be automated "walk bots" that go through WorldStone Keep and on into Baal's Throneroom, but they'd be much less damaging.

What do you guys think? Is this loss of minor content in exchange for crippling bots a worthwhile exchange? For PvP'ers, yes, these silly runewords are essential. But do the duelers realize that most of the runes they trade for are ill-gotten?

A real solution to botting would be preferred, but it seems more likely (if still very unlikely) that Blizzard would choose the easier route: changing the 1's to 0's wherever these runewords are enabled.
