The dev's have also mentioned the possibility of regularly injecting new high end items to keep things fresh. This method comes with it's own set of issues but is probably the least detrimental to player experience. It provides a new challenge every time you think you've gotten close to the last one in the form of new, harder, more exciting content. Essentially, it's the ever moving steak Blizzards dogs (we the players) can run after perpetually.

I hope that they don't make this as detrimental as I've heard it is in WoW where whenever a new slew of items comes out practically everything from the last set becomes obsolete. And I hope they keep away from things as powerful as the 1.10 runewords, some of them were fun and exciting but some of them just helped to bring about ridiculously efficient builds capable of obliterating the content single-handedly in a multiplayer game without the risk of ever dying.
