Q: How do sockets and runewords work in Diablo III?
A: Like in Diablo II, items may have sockets on them: slots that you can fill with gems to permanently change the function of the weapon or armor. Sockets can be added to any quality of item at the blacksmith, from common to legendary, but not all slots. Unlike Diablo II, Diablo III will only allow gems to be socketed in to gear, not jewels or runes, and therefore not runewords.
