One question on this: how far do you want to take it?
I would personally like to see the entire world NOT like Bashiok just mentioned: i.e. completely scripted. Every monster has a job, and their very lives ride on it.
And that means if you are breaking into a castle where those monsters are at, they are organized. You have guys that ring the alarm, guys that are basically 'soldiers,' and guys that are basically 'officers,' who are commanding. They get in formation, march at you, and want badly to make you one of those guys you stumble across in a 'torture scene.'
I mean, it just makes sense. But that is not what we have ever had. So where is the line? I think if you go too far, and make it too realistic, you now have a RTS (ish). Which I personally think is great. I would love to see entire dungoens of guys organize and fight you.
Imagine someone halfway intelligent commanding the inner sanctum monsters in Act 1. The afflicted stay towards the center, curse you with their shots, and then have the fallen rush in and slay you. Shamen stay far back, spread out and reactive to what you do, and resurrect the goats 5 at a time. It would take a lot more beef to get over that screen than anything we have seen so far.
That said, we clearly appear to be going half-way on this. Sould we shift the discussion to the tools you would use? For instance, is there an 'alarm' that will summon more monsters? Can we have more structured fights in the 'new' Chaos Sanctuary? Maybe the 3 chaos sanctuary super uniques are pre-spawned and organize their type of monster?
I don't know, but I am ALL ABOUT the AI (artificial intelligence), and ALL ABOUT fighting organized groups, or armies.
