The game should keep a personal record of your deaths.

That way you can go back to look and say, "Ah damn, I died 42 times... I should be careful not to stain my record any more."

Like this, it is a negative effect because it shows that you've died a lot, all the while it never directly affects gameplay.

It would also make for some fun competition with other players. For example. "BAM! I haven't died yet. Hah I pwn u newbiez LOLZ"



Though there are probably better ways.
