Q u o t e: Personally, I would never join a guild with alot of members. I like smaller, more close-knit "guilds" if you want to call them.
My reasoning for even joining a small guild like that is to get a core group of players that are fun, cool and trustworthy. Usually in small groups of online friends there is very rarely someone who would be "in" and then scam.
And when a new player comes in, you know he has the reference of the people i am already playing with. So it's a way for me to meet them.
I see your point and agree completely.... but, i believe it all depends on what game it is. Like in WoW, a smaller guild is my preference too. In a game such as Diablo, I personally believe that a larger guild would be more beneficial to its members than that of a smaller guild. I'm not talking a thousand members large, I mean more like 50-200 max members would be sufficient for Diablo III. But yeah, I plan on starting smaller and then working up to the max slowly to see how it goes as we increase our numbers, after the release. As of now I'm really just trying to get the word out about Unlimited, so when D3 is finally released, players will know of at least one stable d3 guild with a lot of potential... if they are seeking such a guild.
