Q u o t e:
I think it's an excellent idea, but I also think it will be important that.. I'll call them 'lore items' are few and far between. Like maybe only sets and a few uniques. If they add lore to every unique in the game, I'm afraid it might end up as stated above:

Only the sets and a few uniques would have the bigger lore stories to them, that was my thinking too when I started to come up with this idea. Everything else, like the meager uniques, the beginner uniques, they might just have a one sentence description, that way even if the weapon or piece of armor is kinda crappy you get a little kick out of hearing its description.

For example, you happen to find "The Beatstick, Club" and it's not particularly good for you and you plan on selling it or saving it for another character who might benefit from it, but the short description could be something along the lines of, "Ah yes, The Beatstick! The local bully used to terrorize the younger generation with it... What was that? Human hand was still holding it as you picked it up? My, my... It seems even the cruel aren't spared by the Lord of Terror." Something quick and simple like that.

And as stated in my original post it would be completely optional to listen to any of the stories or descriptions, so if you just don't care you don't have to hear about 'em.

I'm really hoping they put this in the game. It's one of the only things I can think of that I actually really want in D3, besides being able to solo everything but that's a given in the Diablo series. Not only would this add a big dose of lore to the game, but it would encourage players to actually find uniques and sets hoping that they get one with an epic story to read about/listen to. Since most players end up farming or just doing runs to have fun and watch monsters explode, or if they added that infinite dungeon thing and you're able to collect items in there, this would at least make it a little more interesting when trying to gather items or just happen to come across something new when you're playing for fun.
