I have never been a fan of ONLY using DPS as a measure of damage.
While the LCS (Lying Character Screen) from Diablo 2 wasn't reliable, at least a person could calculate their own FPS attack speed (4 fps Zeal, 2 fps Fury, so forth) and figure their own DPS. For example, a 4fps zeal would do (25/4) attacks per second. So if my average damage is 2k per zeal swing, I'm doing 2k * (25/4) or 12,500 damage per second. This, of course, doesn't take into account the 5-hit limit on zeal nor getting 6.25 attacks per second, but the idea is there.
If, however, you just give a person their average DPS rating, they have no idea, as already mentioned, their attack speed or number of attacks per second, nor their specific min and max damage. This is something that bothered me the few times I spent playing WoW - I'd look at my screen and go, "Where's my min and max damage? What's this DPS stuff?" Maybe it fits into WoW when people are trying to maximize DPS and control a monster's attention based on damage, but Diablo is a totally different playing style.
That said, I would like to see an ACCURATE (this means get rid of the LCS) character screen or tooltip that displays each elemental damage, total Crushing Blow, total Deadly Strike, total -enemy resistance if applicable, min/max physical damage, and swings per second based on the current spell selected.
